  1. Feature Engineering Studio November 11, 2013

  2. Poster Session Features • What features did each of you create after the poster session? • Who did the ideas come from? (could be you) • How good were the resultant features?

  3. Friend Features • Who managed to find a friend with relevant background expertise?

  4. Friend Features • What features did your friends suggest?

  5. Cross-validated goodness • Each of you please list • Your full model’s cross-validated goodness • Your friend model’s cross-validated goodness • What can we conclude, if anything?

  6. A different approach than Sao Pedro et al. 2013 • Anyone want to summarize that paper’s approach? • What are the benefits of that paper’s approach? • Are there any major downsides?

  7. Questions? Comments?

  8. Next week • Kelley, T. (2001) The Art of Innovation: Lessons in Creativity from IDEO, America’s Leading Design Firm. • A lot of reading (more than the rest of the semester put together) • You can focus on the parts about brainstorming if you want, although the whole book is fun and interesting • Heck, you can just skim the parts about brainstorming if you want • I assume you’ve all gotten yourself a copy of the book? • If not, e-books are available immediately from Amazon…

  9. Assignment 9 • I was originally thinking that assignment 9 would be a brainstorming assignment • But I think I’m going to do a different kind of assignment, and we’ll practice brainstorming in class next Monday

  10. Assignment 9 • Write a 1-page essay (longer is also fine)

  11. Assignment 9 • Write a 1-page essay (longer is also fine) • I know, an essay

  12. Assignment 9 • Write a 1-page essay (longer is also fine) • I know, an essay • I’ll be grading based on your thoughts, not grammar, writing style, writing ability, etc. • Just get your thoughts down on a page • It doesn’t even have to look like an essay. Bulleted lists are fine (although in that case, make it longer than a page)

  13. Assignment 9 • The essay should be about • Your past experience with brainstorming (if you’ve never brainstormed, think about any time you’ve come up with ideas with a group of friends or colleagues for a project) • What went wrong with brainstorming you’ve done in the past? • Do you think the ideas in this book about how to brainstorm are good in general? What’s good in specific? What’s bad in specific?

  14. Questions? Comments?

  15. Upcoming Classes • 11/13 No special session today • 11/18 Brainstorming • 11/20 No special session today • 11/25 Collaboration in feature engineering

  16. Upcoming Classes • Would folks like a special session on anything? I’m open to discussing anything you’d find useful

  17. Thank you!
