  1. ThesecuredBookmark Dominique P 13 USA

  2. Have you ever? Have you ever experienced the inconvenience of a bookmark falling out when you read a book? Or if you keep losing bookmarks because you take it out of the book and you forget it? A lot of people I know, are always losing their bookmarks, and keep having to buy new ones. It was these reasons that I thought of inventing a new type of bookmark. One that you can leave in your book, and have it not fall out when you open the book.

  3. The History of the bookmark In older times, bookmarks were originally made of papyrus, vellum, or leather. Later, they were made of gold or other luxurious materials , like in 1584 when Queen Elizabeth I of England was presented a silk bookmark by Christopher Baker, who was the royal printer. Bookmarks have been around for a long time. It began in ancient times when a person realized the need of something to mark a spot in a book . They were important to mark a spot in the book without damaging the spine by putting it upside down, or folding a corner of the book. They were also important because books were very valuable and rare. Not only were they helpful, they also were fun to make and were gifts. This became common in the Victorian and the Edwardian age . In 1850, detachable bookmarks appeared. Later in the 1880’s bookmarks made of silk declined and bookmarks made of paper or cardboard increased. Now, there are many types of bookmarks made of different shapes, materials, and styles

  4. How it would work The bookmark This is the enhanced width designed to hold more pages, thus making it secure. This is a extra feature of the bookmark. You tap this button and it will tip the cardboard piece to flip the page, without taking out the bookmark. This is the cardboard strip. When the button is pressed, the other side will lift, like a scale. This is a window to allow the pages to pass.

  5. I Built it 1.) First I Cut out 2 triangles with flaps. 2.) Second, I creased the flaps and glued them together for both triangles. 3.) Next I glued the two pieces of triangles together to form the bookmark itself , and cut the window. 4.) Then I cut a whole and inserted a cylinder-like button. 5.)Finally I added two pieces of cardboard, one as abalance, and the other as fulcrum. extra

  6. What it would look like

  7. Test it out

  8. Improve It! Although the normal version works, and is secure, the extra features do not work. If I improve it, I would first improve the fulcrum, and button to make it successfully work. The reason it won’t work is because I do not have a good fulcrum. The one I have now does not allow much movement, does not have enough leverage, and takes too much space that was meant for the book pages. The other reason why it will not work is because I did not put the button in correctly.

  9. Why is it worth it??? The “secured bookmark” can hold 120 pages and not fall out! The normal version is practical, and is good for its purpose. The bookmark with the extra features, is new and well thought of. It not only serves its purpose, but makes it easier not to lose the bookmark. The only reason you would take it out would be to put in another 120 pages after you read previous 120 pages. You just need to click the button to elevate the page enough to turn it without taking it out and pitting it back in every time you read. It works especially good with bigger books since you would cut back the time you would usually take using a normal bookmark, unless you finish it in one day. They are also portable and are designed to fit the book, so it doesn’t stick out, where it could easily fall. Everyone reads, and bookmarks are common and well used. If you need a bookmark , I suggest this one!
