  6. Exciting Intersection

  7. Technology and Education • A little history • Successes and failures • PDA technology • Opportunities?

  8. The Story so Far • Where do we start? • Mimeograph machines? • Slide rules? • Oil lamps?

  9. The Story so Far • Instructional Television • Introduced in the late 1960s • Praised for distance ed / specialization • Now ubiquitous

  10. The Story so Far • Handheld Calculators • Introduced in the early 1960s • Simplified mundane computations • Grew into more complex devices • Graphing calculators, formula solvers • Now ubiquitous

  11. The Story so Far • Desktop Computers • Introduced in the late 1970s • Transitioned through several phases: • Administrative • Roving labs • Single labs per building • Multiple, specialized labs • Teacher computers • Multiple computers in classroom

  12. Successes and Failures • What worked? What didn’t? • What should we have done? • Is it too late to fix some things?

  13. Successes and Failures Instructional Television + Distance education + Specialized instruction + Emergency substitute + Familiar experience

  14. Successes and Failures Instructional Television - Usually passive, not active - Longer sessions are less effective - Easy to abuse

  15. Successes and Failures Instructional Television Could we have avoided these problems?

  16. Successes and Failures Handheld Calculators + Simplify mundane calculation + Enable mathematical exploration + Support more complex exercises + Reduce random error

  17. Successes and Failures Handheld Calculators - Often become a crutch for students - Some understanding lost (ex. sqrt, log)

  18. Successes and Failures Handheld Calculators Could we have avoided these problems?

  19. Successes and Failures • What is a good model for building and deploying new educational technologies?

  20. PDA Technology Personal Digital Assistant • Handheld • Organizer • Computer • Connected

  21. PDA Technology Questions: • How many are there? • About 20 major models, and about 10 million in use in the United States • How much do they cost? • From $100 to $700, depending on the model and the features

  22. PDA Technology • What can they do? • Calendars, to-do lists, memos, email, games, web browsing, play music, movies, connect to the Internet, etc, etc. • Why Palm™? • 88% market share

  23. PDA Technology • What are the opportunities for education? • Administrative • Scheduling, assignment tracking, attendance, etc. • Academic • Investigations, educational materials, homework, assessment • Collaborative • Share information with other teachers, educators, or between students

  24. Opportunities? • Next steps • Learn more about the affordances • Discover the pitfalls and avoid them • Give PDA’s to teachers and students • Find out what tools exist, and what need to be built • Establish pilot programs at local schools

  25. Palm Workshop What are we gonna do? • Yes, we will play with the Palms • Investigate different Palm related technology • Demonstrate connection between Palms and personal computers • Have fun!
