  1. 2010-2011 LISD Math CurriculumUpdates

  2. Who is the NCTM? • They are the public voice of mathematics education supporting teachers to ensure equitable mathematics learning of the highest quality for all students through vision, leadership, professional development and research.

  3. Curriculum Focal Points are the most important mathematical topics for each grade level. They comprise related ideas, concepts, skills, and procedures that form the foundation for understanding and using mathematics and lasting learning. Curriculum Focal Points have been integral in the revision of many state math standards... • http://www.nctmmedia.org/cfp/focal_points_by_grade.pdf

  4. NCTM composed at least 3 “focal points” for each grade level They relate to each of the following concepts: • numbers & operations • geometry • measurement • algebra • They all make a connection with data analysis

  5. Texas responds to the focal points and connects them to our TEKS.

  6. Leander ISD also responded and rearranged our Essential Units of Study to match up with TEA’s focal points.

  7. Newly Added Components To The LISD Math Curriculum Document Site Student Data Notebook Resources*** Additional PERFORMANCE TASKS PRE-ASSESSMENTS Student Learning Progressions

  8. Vocabulary Guessing Game! • 1. At what grade level is minuend introduced? • 2. At what grade level do you think the word digit is introduced? • 3. At what grade level is the word quarter (indicative of money) introduced? • 4. When is the decimal point first introduced? • 5. When is the word angle introduced? • 6. Which grade level has the most vocabulary?

  9. Vocabulary Recap • Introduced • Non-bolded denotes vocabulary being introduced in that grade level • Some words are considered “introduced” if they are taught for the first time in that objective or specific unit • Example: number line is a vocabulary word that is introduced in Obj.1 (Kindergarten) however number line also shows up on Obj.3 (3rd grade) as an introduced word. It shows up this way in 3rd grade because it is the first time they are seeing fractions on a number line. • Ongoing • Bolded denotes vocabulary already taught or introduced (previous grade levels)

  10. District data shows that basic facts scores are low in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Basic Facts

  11. How can we improve our student’s fact fluency at Westside? We need your input! • Use a sticky note to make at least one suggestion! • Please post the note on the chart paper as you leave today! • THANK YOU!  • Link to Strategies: • http://classroom.leanderisd.org/webs/elemmath/learning_our_math_facts.htm
