  6. Alternative terms • Synonyms – terms with the same or similar meaning e.g. parameters, limits or boundaries. • Abbreviations i.e. VCI = Volatile Corrosion Inhibitors • Different spellings e.g. US Organization/Organisation • Different endings of a word i.e. organization, organizations, organizational

  7. Combining search terms • AND narrows your search. E.g. inhibition AND corrosion • OR widens the search, useful for synonyms. E.g. volatile OR unstable • SAME finds terms in the same sentence. E.g. corrosion SAME volatile • NOT excludes unwanted terms. E.g. metallic NOT vapour

  8. Narrowing Your Search • Use LIMITS • document type • language • date • review articles only • Use quotes to search for exact phrases “corrosion inhibition” • Use more search terms linked with AND

  9. Broadening Your Search • Use truncation to include different endings: • inhibit* yields inhibit, inhibitors, inhibition etc. • Add synonyms to your search – • parameters OR limits • Use fewer search terms

  10. Databases – points to remember • Databases are used to search for journal articles – they tell you where to find articles. • Databases tell you what’s been published – not necessarily what is held in the library • Articles found on databases will need to be looked for on the library catalogue (or via FindIt@JRUL links if available) • You may need to search more than one database.
