Mole-Mass Relationship • All pure substances can be represented using molar mass • Elements and compounds – anything that can be written in formula • Molar mass can be used to convert units of mass into moles and vice versa • As long as you have been provided either the mass or moles of substance • The state of matter of the substance will be solid or liquid • Ex. How many moles are in 200g of Na2SO4? • Ex. What is the mass of 2.3mol of CaO?

Mole-Volume Relationship • When it comes to gases, molar mass is not used as a conversion factor • Equal volumes of gases at the same temperature have the same number of particles • The particles that make up different gases are not the same size • Space exists between the particles regardless of their size • The volume of a gas is measured at standard temperature and pressure (STP) to avoid fluctuations to its volume • Temperature is 0oC • Pressure is 101.3kPa, or 1atm • The mole of a gas at STP is 22.4L/mol
