  3. Methods Questionnaire sent to all 21 DHB’s in New Zealand Sent to DHB CEO’s requesting information under the OIA All DHB’s eventually responded Data reviewed and verified

Recommended Diabetes Physician Workforce • 77 hours per week for outpatient diabetes + administration per 250,000 population. • This equates to 1FTE per 125,000 population or 0.8FTE per 100,000 population • Based on data from “Federation of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom. Census of consultant physicians in the UK, 2006. Data and commentary. Suffolk: Lavenham Press, 2007.”

Conclusion • There is significant variation in the provision of diabetes specialist physician services between DHB's. • The national mean is 0.35 FTE Diabetes Specialist Physicians per 100,000 population. • The total Diabetes Specialist Physician FTE for New Zealand is 14.5 • No DHB has a Diabetes Specialist Physician service that is at or above that recommended by the Federation of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom. • New Zealand requires 19.4 more Diabetes Specialist Physician FTE's to meet recommended numbers.

  14. Diabetes Nurse Specialist Workforce Findings: • There is significant variation in the provision of Diabetes Nurse Specialist services between DHB’s. • The national mean is 2.79 FTE Diabetes Nurse Specialists per 100,000 population. • The national range is 1.08 to 4.87 per 100,000 population.

  19. Conclusions There is significant regional variation in the resources allocated to diabetes care throughout New Zealand This raises the distinct possibility that there is inequity of care No region currently meets the recommended FTE for Diabetes Physicians

  20. NZSSD Recommendations National consensus on the diabetes workforce required per 100,000 individuals Variance based on ethnic mix DHB’s should be instructed to achieve this target over a certain period Training of health professionals required to meet the need
