  1. The CAMP Program: Holistic Support Presented by Rosalia Delgado, CAMP Director And Rafael Encinas, CAMP Advisor

  2. What does CAMP Provide? • A Holistic First Year living & learning experience to students with a background in agriculture. • Residential Stipend • Academic, Social, Cultural, and Financial Support

  3. What does camp measure? • First Year Completion of 24 credits • (National CAMP Target is 86% Completion Rate) • Successful Retention into a second year • (National CAMP Target is 92% Retention Rate)

  4. How does camp measure these? • Participation in events • Tutoring & Mentoring attendance • Student survey • Extensive sign-in sheets • Academic Status Report

  5. CAMP’s Goals • To outreach and identify 100 potential participants and recruit/enroll 40 eligible students • To annually provide students with 100% academic support services and cultural activities through a Living/Learning Community. • Retaining at least 86% of students through the first year of college. • To enroll 92% of retained students in a second year of college. • To offer 100% follow-up services.

  6. Objective one: Outreach & Identification

  7. Objective one Measures • Outreach to High School districts and Migrant Education by conducting CAMP Survey and/or CAMP workshop • Outreach to community organizations serving farm workers • Outreach to migrant and farm worker parents one-on-one and in groups. • Met with YUHSD Migrant Program Staff, and all YUHSD counseling departments • Held CAMP workshops at all YUHSD high schools and local charter high schools. • Continuously met with high schools seniors at all local high schools and in the AWC SLLC • CAMP informational booth at Cash For College Event hosted at Yuma Library. • CAMP informational booth at Experience AWC

  8. Objective one Results • Over 1,500 students were outreached, but only 92 completed a full application. • Further Action Planned: • Recruiter will collaborate with high schools and migrant program to conduct a workshop in the fall and a workshop in the spring. • It was discovered that many students were missed due to the fact that there was only one workshop conducted in the year.

  9. Objective one Analysis & Recommendations • Strengths: • YUHSD Migrant liaisons assisted with identifying students who had not been to a CAMP presentation. • Areas of Improvement: • Not all students followed-up to complete the entirety of the CAMP application. • Recommendations: • Continue to work with High School Counselors to ensure accurate and complete CAMP surveys in order to identify a greater number of potential students. • Continue to have constant contact with a more rigorous follow-through for potential students. • Continue to work with community partners and work to make new partners.

  10. Objective Two: Provide a holistic living & Learning experience for camp students

  11. Objective Two: Provide a holistic living & Learning experience for camp students

  12. Objective Two Measures • Provide academic support services: • Including Tutoring & Mentoring Support and Consistent Academic Advising Sessions

  13. Objective Two Measures • Students are provided with 100% of student support services and programming activities through a rigorous tracking system.

  14. Objective Two Measures • Comparison of grades of CAMP students, the general student population, and all other students living in the residence halls for English and math courses.

  15. Objective Two Results • All 40 students (100%) were provided with CAMP services. • Consistent attendance and support was reinforced by higher percentage student grades for cohort English and math classes compared to the general population, and through mandatory tutoring for traditionally difficult courses like developmental English and math.

  16. Objective Two Analysis & Recommendations • Strengths: • Mandatory attendance of activities that is documented through sign-in sheets works. • Areas of Improvement: • Though 100% of support services were provided, not all events had 100% participation or attendance. • Recommendations: • Surveying more programming events throughout the semester is a good way of getting more information on which events are the most engaging or useful to students. • Continue with aggressive tutoring attendance tracking.
