I Sam. 5-6; 7:1-12 • I Sam. 5-6: The Ark of the covenant sent back by the Philistines, Israelites opened it and 50,00 were struck dead by God so they sent it to a house in Kiriath-jearim, where it remained for 20 years. • I Sam. 7:1-6: Samuel told the people to repent, & God would save them from the Philistines. • I Sam. 7:7-13: Samuel prayed to God asking Him to save them from the Philistines, and He answered with thunder that routed them, and allowed the Israelites to slaughter them! • I Sam. 7:12: Samuel set a stone to God and called it, “Ebenezer” and said because, “Thus far the LORD has helped us.” • Ebenezer(H72): “stone of the help;” or “Stone of Help” Intro I Sam. 7:12 12. Then Samuel took a stone and set it between Mizpah and Shen, and named it Ebenezer, saying, "Thus far the LORD has helped us." Ps. 68:19-20 19. Robert Robinson (1735-1790) • “O, Thou Fount Of Every Blessing” (1758) • Robinson grew up on the streets of London as a gang member. • He became a Calvinistic Methodist at around age 20, of which he became a minister, then he preached for an Independent congregation; his last 31 years as a Baptist preacher. • He wrote “O, Thou Fount Of Every Blessing” in 1758 with the original title saying, “Come, Thou Fount Of Every Blessing.” It was 1st published in 1759. • The tune is called “Nettleton” or ‘Hallelujah” but has been a mystery as to who wrote it! Teach me ever to adore Thee; May I still Thy goodness prove, While the hope of endless glory Fills my heart with joy and love.” • God opened a fountain for our salvation: • Zech. 13.1: First to the remnant of the Jews. • Jn. 4:14; Rev. 7:17; 21:6: Then to those who obey Christ! • Eph. 1:3; Js. 1:17: God is the giver of every good gift, of every blessing! • Heb. 13:15: • All these blessings call for songs of loudest praise (Ps. 106:1). • Rom. 12:1-2: • In praising God and keeping His blessings ever before us, we will not be conformed to the world but we will prove His goodness! Jesus sought me when a stranger, Wandering from the fold of God; He to rescue me from danger Interposed His precious blood.” • I Sam. 7:12; Rom. 8:31-32: • The story of Samuel raising up the “stone of help” (Ebenezer) is used to remind us that it is by God’s help that we have made whatever progress we have! • Lk. 19:10: • One way that God has helped us is by sending Jesus to seek us – His mission on earth: “To seek and to save that which was lost!” The Lord is Our Helper Rom. 8:31-32 31. What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? 32. He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things? Ebenezer: The Stone Of Help

The Lord is our “Help and Shield!” (Ps. 33:20; 46:1) The Lord is Our Helper Ps. 33:20 20. Our soul waits for the LORD; He is our help and our shield. Ebenezer: The Stone Of Help

  8. “O, to grace how great a debtor Daily I’m constrained to be! Let Thy goodness, like a fetter, Bind my wandering heart to Thee. Never let me wander from Thee, Never leave the God I love; Here’s my heart, O, take and seal it, Seal it for Thy courts above.” • Mt. 18:21-35; Eph. 2:8-9: • We are debtors because we are saved by grace! • Heb. 2:1-4; II Pet. 1:5-11: • Because it is still possible for us to wander, we should also hold fast to His word and practice self-control so that we “never stumble!” The Lord is Our Savior Because of His Grace Eph. 2:8-9 8. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9. not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. Ebenezer: The Stone Of Help

II Tim. 4:6-8 6. For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. 7. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith; 8. in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who have loved His appearing. The hymn was written out of gratitude for God saving a man from the rough streets of London and from a life of living as a gang member • The hymn points to the fact that God is: • The source for every blessing, our help when we are in trouble, and our salvation! • I Sam. 7:12: Sometimes the Israelites • strayed from the Lord • Samuel gathered them together at Mizpah where he called on them to return to the Lord and prayed for them. The Philistines attacked, but rather than trusting in themselves, the Israelites called on the Lord who defeated the enemy. • It was then that Samuel erected the stone which he called “Ebenezer,” the “stone of help.” Conclusion Ebenezer: The Stone Of Help

  11. God has saved us from our sins and an eternity of eternal punishment (Rom. 5:8-9; I Pet. 1:4) – how much more shall we give Him thanks and praise for saving us!? Conclusion When we remember His blessings, each one of us raises his own “Ebenezer” when we praise our God, saying, “O Thou Fount of Every Blessing!” Ebenezer: The Stone Of Help
