  2. Child-rearing a. Children were often treated indifferently and with strict physical discipline. • The use of wet-nurses is a good example. (wet nurse is someone who breast feeds your baby for you) • Because of such high mortality rates, parents were reluctant to become too emotionally attached to their children.(incredibly high birth rates and child mortality rates, both will increase towards the end of this period)

Doctors often declined to care for sick children believing there was little that could be done. • Children were exposed to great epidemics like the bubonic plague and small pox, but also faced risks like measles and influenza which without better treatment could be fatal or cause permanent damage

Child-rearing c. “Spare the rod and spoil the child” –term coined by novelist Daniel Defoe means a child will only flourish if chastised, physically or otherwise, for any wrongdoing and represents the attitudes of the time • Many children worked in factories at a young age and were severely disciplined. • Many believed the task of parents was to break their will to make them obedient.

  5. Child-rearing d. Humanitarianism and Enlightenment optimism regarding human progress emphasized better treatment of children. • Rousseau encouraged greater love and understanding toward children. • Increasingly, parents grew closer to their children.
