  2. The Internet is a... • Network of computers linking to one another globally! • Information on the Internet is located on many millions of computers throughout the world.

  3. Names that refer to the Internet • The Information Superhighway - The Internet is like traveling on a highway to visit someone’s computer to get information. Every stop you make at a web page is like an exit off a highway. • The World Wide Web - If you had to draw a picture of the Internet it would end up looking much like a spider web. The spider web would span across the world.

  4. Hook It Up! Things You Need ... • Computer • Phone line • Modem (56K) • Internet Service Provider (AOL, Earthlink, MSN, etc) • Web Browsing Software(Netscape Navigator or  Internet Explorer)

  5. Faster Ways to Connect to the Net! • ISDN Line (Phone Line) • DSL Line (Satellite) • Cable Line (Cable Line) • T1 or T3 (Direct Network Line)

  6. View Through Your Web Browser • Web Browser Software - Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer • Function - Allows you to view web pages graphically • HTML - HyperText Markup Language is the programming language used to create web pages

  7. URL: Uniform Resource Locator • Every web page has a unique URL or web address (much like your home address) • Contains type of protocol followed by the computer name, directory and file name • Most web pages begin with http:// • http://www.whitehouse.gov/president/welcome.htm

Domain Name & Domain Name Endings • Domain Name - the unique name that identifies an Internet site. • Domain Name Endings - refers to the type of website it represents. • .com (commercial) .gov (government) • .edu (education) .mil (military) • .org (non profit) .net (network resources) • http://www.whitehouse.gov/

  11. Using Your Web Browser! Takes you back to the page you were viewing Let’s you stop loading the current web page. Takes you forward to the page you just viewed Takes you back to the home setting in your web browser. Let’s you reload your current web page. Gives you a history list of all the web sites you visited currently in your web browser. You can save your favorite web pages in your web browser. Tells you your web page is loading.
