  2. The years between the fall of Rome and A.D. 1500 are now called the Middle Ages. P.Trejo

The Middle Ages. • The Roman Empire came to an end in A.D. 476. • The years between 476 and 1500 are known as the Middle Ages. • A system of government called feudalism arose during the Middle Ages. • The Crusades that occurred between 1096-1291 changed Europe in many important ways and influenced the growth of towns and trade between Europe and the East.   4. Charlemagne was one of the greatest kings of the Middle ages. P.Trejo

  5. The feudalism was a kind of government. It was also a way of life. P.Trejo

  6. The nobles promised to help fight the king’s enemies. P.Trejo

  7. The kings gave land to the nobles under him. P.Trejo

  8. The nobles were called vassals of the king. The vassals who fought for their king or for other nobles were called knights. P.Trejo

  9. A serf was someone who farmed the land. Serfs had to pay rent and taxes to the nobles. P.Trejo

  10. Most people in the early Middle ages lived on a manor. This manor is very grand because it includes a castle. P.Trejo

  12. A small church was an important part of each manor. P.Trejo

  13. The church saved education from completely disappearing after the fall of Rome. P.Trejo

  14. Christian priests learned to read and write. All books were handwritten. P.Trejo

  15. The church helped keep the knowledge of Greece and Rome from being forgotten. P.Trejo

  16. Clergy were Religious men and women (called monks and nuns) who lived in small communities with other clergy. P.Trejo

  21. Christians made a long, difficult journey to visit Jerusalem. P.Trejo
