COS Standard 3 Trace the chronology of events leading to the American Revolution including the French and Indian War, passage of the Stamp Act, the Boston Tea Party, the Boston Massacre, passage of the Intolerable Acts, the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the publican of Common Sense and the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

  2. Summarizing major ideas of the Declaration of Independence, including theories of John Locke, Charles de Montesquieu and Jean-Jacques Rousseau Chapter 3 Section 4

  3. Enlightenment • European cultural movement • Challenged authority of the church in science and philosophy • Elevated the power of human reason • Emphasized logic and reasoning (rationalism)

  4. John Locke • Natural rights: Life, Liberty and Property • If government does not give you these rights, you can overthrow it. • Influences the writers of the Declaration of Independence

  5. Baron Montesquieu • To protect people’s liberties, the government should be separated into different branches of government to provide checks and balances against one another. • Influences writers of the Constitution

  6. Jean Jacques Rousseau • Government and its laws should be created by the consent of the people. • Social Contract Theory: if government is being abusive, then change or overthrow it.
