  3. What is Goalsetting? • What are goals? • A goal is a predetermined destination. • It is a clear objective. • It can also be defined as a clear statement of • what one wants to achieve

  4. What is Goalsetting? Goalsetting is a process-tool of converting desires, wishes and intentions into tangible achievements within the broad framework of one’s plans and purposes

  5. How does goalsetting fit in the larger framework of leadership in the DOD? The DoD needs military leaders Leaders are change agents Leaders bring hope

  6. What happens when we do not set goals? - Danger of becoming drifters Danger of missing the mark Fail to lead and inspire team members Fail to lead fulfilled lives

  7. Why do we not set goals? Fear of failure Childhood programming Doubts Lack desire / ambition

  8. The Leadership Crisis We are experiencing a crisis of leadership in our world Sept 2012 there will be thousands more people in SA. Who will lead them? Will we develop or destroy them?

  9. Defining Leadership Leadership is the discipline of deliberately exerting special influence within a group to move it toward goals of beneficial permanence that fulfill the group’s real needs. (John E Haggai)

  10. GOALSETTING AND LEADERSHIP A leader must have a vision. That vision must be fulfilled by goals that work toward the achievement of the vision. A vision is the foundation of all leadership

  11. Goalsetting and Commitment A leader’s vision requires a commitment to act That commitment is called a mission A leader without goals is like a platoon captain without a compass.

  12. Effective Goalsetting To be effective a leader must constantly sharpen the focus of his/her vision. The clearer the leader’s goals, the sharper his/her focus

  16. Vision and Mission Both are put in into practice with a set of specific goals

  17. Goalsetting is an ongoing discipline. You cannot do it once and ignore it Today’s world demands nothing less than a clearly defined goals program KE NAKO – IT’ YOUR TIME!!
