  1. What do we know about the universe? • A ‘finger’ of the Universe’s dark-matter skeleton, which ultimately dictates where galaxies form, has been observed for the first time. Researchers have directly detected a slim bridge of dark matter joining two clusters of galaxies, using a technique that could eventually help astrophysicists to understand the structure of the Universe and identify what makes up the mysterious invisible substance known as dark matter. • According to the standard model of cosmology, visible stars and galaxies trace a pattern across the sky known as the cosmic web, which was originally etched out by dark matter — the substance thought to account for almost 80% of the Universe’s matter. Soon after the Big Bang, regions that were slightly denser than others pulled in dark matter, which clumped together and eventually collapsed into flat ‘pancakes’. “Where these pancakes intersect, you get long strands of dark matter, or filaments,” explains Jörg Dietrich, a cosmologist at the University Observatory Munich in Germany. Clusters of galaxies then formed at the nodes of the cosmic web, where these filaments crossed.

  2. How much do we know about the Universe? One of the key questions that needs to be answered by astrophysicists is what is really out there? And of what is it all made? Without this understanding it is impossible to come to any firm conclusions about how the universe evolved. Astronomers like to call all material made up of protons, neutrons and electrons "baryonic matter". 4.6% Atoms. More than 95% of the energy density in the universe is in a form that has never been directly detected in the laboratory! 24% Cold Dark Matter. Dark matter is likely to be composed of one or more species of sub-atomic particles that interact very weakly with ordinary matter. 71.4% Dark Energy. The first observational hints of dark energy in the universe date back to the 1980's when astronomers were trying to understand how clusters of galaxies were formed.

Our team analyzed the mass content of the enormous, merging galaxy cluster MACSJ0025.4-1222 using the Hubble and Chandra Space Telescopes to disentangle dark and normal matter—that is, matter made up of baryons, common subatomic particles such as protons and neutrons. Dark matter in our solar system • Models of dark matter around galaxies that fit in with observations (the relationship between the velocities of stars at various radii from the galactic centre - see virial theorem) show an almost spherical distribution around the galactic disc that spreads some distance beyond the disc itself. This gives a very low, but even density of dark matter, which would mean that there is no reason to suppose that it would excluded from our solar system. The density is very low though, and because it is thought to only interact with other matter gravitationally, it is very hard to detect by any localised measurement.
