  2. History of portraits • Rome was a didn’t have a King or Queen for many years • After Julius Caesar died in 44 BC, Augustus became the new Emperor. The Roman people were nervous about having a man in charge who might behave like a King. • Augustus had this statue made, and copies were distributed in all major cities throughout the Roman Empire. • This portrait was designed to present Augustus in a particular way to the people.

  3. 15th century portraits • Portraits are mostly used for the Church, with religious figures such as Christ, saints, disciples and martyrs. Kings, Queens and aristocrats of high status also commissioned portraits.

  4. 1837 – when portraits changed • In 1837 the first permanent photographic process, this means that the subject could be exactly copied, and not painted, so there was no room for ‘interpretation’. Photographs can capture fleeting moments, and are a lot cheaper than paintings.

  5. portraits today • Portraits today are used for a number of things , such as adverts, passport pictures and front covers of books, magazines and CD covers. • Portrait photography is a popular commercial industry all over the world. Many people enjoy having professionally made family portraits to hang in their homes, or special portraits to commemorate certain events, such as graduations or weddings.
