  17. Exact Title Search Hint: If you don’t get any results from an “Title Equals” search try using either the “Title Contains These Words” search or “Title Begins” search.

  23. e-Journal Tips • Double check in eJournal list • Even if you know we have a journal • Don’t always get from Publisher • Example: Lancet through ScienceDirect not at Lancet.com • If the list says we have access to something and you can’t get it –contact me - I will investigate. • Double check the eJournals list if the link within a database doesn’t work

Boolean Nesting • When using 2 different commands (AND, OR, NOT) in 1 search statement, use parentheses to clarify your intent: • (Medicare OR medicaid ) AND pharmacies • (Medicaid NOT Florida) AND pharmacies • Do not do this: (medicare AND aged) OR pharmacies • You will get the world of articles on pharmacies not related to medicare and the aged.

  25. Natural v. Standardized Terms • Keywords = whatever words in whatever forms both you and the author happen to think of • Subject headings = standardized terms that mediate between whatever words any searcher thinks of and whatever words all authors think of and all the various possible grammatical forms (n,adj,v, adv) and all homonyms (hearing) • Variously called Descriptors, Headings, MeSH and found under Thesaurus, Headings or MeSH Database
