  3. The Black Death • One third of Europe’s population died • That’s more than 25 million people

  4. Spice Trade • Spices were valuable • The growing population of Europe led to the need for trade • Most of the spices came from the Moluccas, present day Indonesia • Arab and Italian merchants controlled trade

  5. Exploration • Europeans wanted to find a more direct route to Asia • Prince Henry sponsored Portuguese exploration • Prince Henry wanted to: • Convert Africans to Christianity • Find riches • Find a more direct route to Asia

  6. Exploration • Henry enlisted cartographers, or map makers • Bartholomeu Dias sailed around Africa and the Cape of Good Hope in 1488 • Vasco da Gama landed on Calcut, India in 1497 • He lost half his crew but became enormously wealthy through trade.

  8. Columbus • Christopher Columbus wanted to get in on the success • He was Italian • He knew the earth was spherical • He underestimated the size of the earth • Portugal refused to sponsor him

  10. Sponsorship • Spain gave Columbus a chance • Ferdinand and Isabella sponsored him because they wanted to: • Increase their authority • Strengthen Catholicism • Bring wealth and prestige

  12. Columbus • On August 3, 1492 Columbus set sail • The Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria carried them

  13. Columbus • On October 12 Columbus landed in the new world • He cruised around the islands of the Caribbean's • He thought he had had landed in the Indies • This is where the term “Indians” comes from • Later on it was realized that it was an unknown land

  14. Dividing the World • In 1493 Pope Alexander VI set the Line of Demarcation • This gave trading and exploration rights to Spain west of the line, and Portugal east • The line was agreed upon and signed in 1494 in the Treaty of Tordesillas

  15. Naming the New World • Martin Waldseemuller coined the term “America” • The Caribbean islands are now called the “West Indies”

Magellan • Ferdinand Magellan set out to find a direct way to Asia • He was Portuguese • He left on September 20, 1519 from Spain • He cruised the east coast looking for a passage to the Pacific Ocean • They braved storms but eventually found the what came to be known as the Straight of Magellan

  19. Carrying On • Magellan’s crew wanted to turn back after their discovery • Magellan wanted to push on to the Indies • The Pacific Ocean was way larger than he anticipated • It took them four months to get there. • They arrived at the Philippines

  20. Death • Magellan tried to fight some Philippines and was killed • The 18 survivors of his crew returned to Spain • They were the first to circumnavigate the globe, or sail all the way around it
