  2. Scientific Notation – a shortcut for writing very large or very small numbers Two Parts: 1) a number greater than or equal to one, but less than ten 2) times a power of 10

  3. To write a large number in scientific notation: 1) move the decimal to the left until you get a number greater than or equal to 1, but less than 10 – write this number 2) write a multiplication sign 3) write a 10 with a positive exponent that comes from the number of times you moved the decimal

  4. To write a small number in scientific notation: 1) move the decimal to the right until you get a number greater than or equal to one, but less than 10 – write the number 2) write a multiplication sign 3) write a 10 with a negative exponent that comes from the number of times you moved the decimal

  5. Are the following numbers large or small numbers? large 5,894,000 0.0059 269,000 0.0000000498 small large small

  6. Write in scientific notation. a. 687,000 6.87 x 105 5 x 107 b. 50,000,000 3.576 x 10-6 c. 0.000003576

  7. Write in scientific notation. a. 92,000 9.2 x 104 6.348 x 108 b. 634,800,000 2.605 x 10-5 c. 0.00002605

  8. To write a number in standard form: 1) move the decimal point the number of times as the exponent 2) positive exponent – move to the right negative exponent – move to the left 3) add 0s if you run out of numbers 4) write the number

  9. Write each number in standard form. a. 8.495 x 105 849,500 b. 3.08 x 10-4 0.000308

  10. Write each number in standard form. a. 8.3004 x 10-5 0.000083004 b. 3.253 x 106 3,253,000
