Learning Objectives By the end of this session you will be able to • Identify your roles and responsibilities as a course rep • Describe how and why student views are used by the University and the Students’ Union • Identify the skills required to be a successful course rep • Consider how best to deal with various scenarios that you could face as a course rep • Describe the resources and support available to you as a course rep

  3. Questions Why did you become a course rep? What do you think the most important task of a course rep is? Who are course reps accountable to?

  4. Finding out the views of your peers • Posters in departments • Lecture shouts • Canvassing opinion • Holding surgeries or drop-ins • Having your details on a departmental website http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/nursing/students/feedback/sscc/index.php • Emailing people • Campus Connection forum

  5. Staff Student Consultative Committees • SSCCs – happen in each department at least once a term • Academics and students represented • Every department is different! • Your chance to raise the views of your peers and resolve them with the staff in your department

Feeding back to your peers • Representation is a two way process! • Use the same methods as before – emails, noticeboards, etc • Circulate the minutes of meetings to show what has been discussed • Consult students on any relevant issues • Make sure they know how hard you are working on their behalf!

  10. Questions to ask your department Who are the other members of the SSCC? When and where do the meetings take place? How do I let the department know that I have individual requirements for the meeting? When and how do I get an item on the agenda? When and how will I get papers for the meeting?

  11. Questions to ask your department Who do I let know if I can’t make a meeting? When and how will I get copies of the minutes? How do I get copies of past minutes? Does the department offer any administrative support to reps? Does the department offer any help to reps in communicating to students in the department?
