The Horticulture Industryin Ontario • Gardening is the #1 leisure activity in North America • Landscape/Horticulture is the #1 (production) commodity of the broad agricultural industry in Ontario • Business revenues are estimated at over $6.5 billion annually in Ontario; at present trends (15% increase in gross revenues annually), this could double by 2008 • Over 100,000 people are employed in Ontario’s various sectors of Horticulture Table of contents

  7. What Does It Take?Any or All of the Following: • An avid interest in working outdoors • Creativity • A capacity for physical activity • Ambition • Wanting to make something of yourself • An interest in plants • Training and skills development • Etc… Table of contents

What is….? • Certificate/Diploma:generally one to three year programs designed for those who want to develop or upgrade skills in a specific area without necessarily proceeding towards a three or four year degree program. • Degree:generally a 3 or 4 year baccalaureate program possible leading to further studies or advanced degrees. • Apprenticeship: formal agreement between an individual who wants to learn and an employer who needs a skilled worker and is an “earning while learning” arrangement for a required term. • Continuing Education:non-credit personal and professional development courses. In some cases courses may be applied toward further studies. • Distance Education:degree courses without attending on-campus classes. Provides flexibility in study schedule for those students who choose to study independently • Co-operative Education:provides eligible students the opportunity to alternate semesters of academic study with semesters of paid work experience.
