  1. The Seven Churches of AsiaHow Jesus Sees the Church:Pergamum “I know your works, and where you dwell, where Satan’s throne is. And you hold fast to My name, and did not deny My faith . . . But I have a few things against you” (Revelation 2:13-14a).

  2. Concern for the Truth • The Lord both commends and corrects the church: • “You hold fast My name, and did not deny My faith” (13). • “You have there some who hold the teaching of Balaam” (14). • He charges them to “Repent, else I will come quickly” (16). • What central truths must we teach and defend? • Jesus is the Christ, Son of the living God, and the only Savior. • The church is His bride, the body of the saved. • The Bible is inspired of God, our guide in faith and practice. • The gospel must be believed, obeyed, and lived daily.

  3. Opposition to the Truth • Jesus reveals the origin of Pergamum’s error, Satan (13)! • Satan is a real, spirit being who has limited powers. • Satan wins when sin and error are not opposed; he loses when the church defends and advances the truth! • “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing” (Edmund Burke, 1729-97).

  4. Triumph of the Truth • “Repent, else I am coming to you quickly” (16a). • He described Himself as “the One who has the sharp two-edged sword” (12). • He assures victory over error and evil: “I will make war against them with the sword of My mouth” (16b). • He closes the letter with the promise of reward to those who hold fast the truth without denial.

  5. “To him who overcomes, to him I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, and a new name written on the stone which no one knows but he who receives it” (Revelation 2:17).
