  2. What is Gifted? • Lots of definitions • IQ theory • Renzulli 3-ring • Gardner multiple intelligences • Federal definition • State definition • Local identification • And many more! (See my website for my comments on each) • Giftedness is not an easy thing to define

PA vs. Renzulli • PA definition is legal and up to individual district • Once a student is gifted, they are always labelled gifted and get services (GIEP) • Renzulli is just one practical application • Student can move in and out of gifted behavior • http://www.gigers.com/matthias/gifted/three_rings.html

Ansynchronous Development • Gifted students don’t develop in an accelerated way in all aspects. • Mind can be ahead of body, emotions – this is often the case. • Student may not know how to use their advanced mind and become frustrated. • Are students emotionally ready for advanced classes? • Are they mature enough for ethical discussions?

Social Education • Let’s be honest… many of our gifted kids that we teach theoretically could teach themselves… • “If only they applied themselves” • “They’re so smart but do nothing” • “They have so much potential” • We act as if there’s something wrong with the kid… • In reality, this is the norm with gifted students. The “task commitment” ring needs to be constantly monitored and encouraged.

  7. Social Education • Why is the teacher necessary for gifted kids? They are good enough to learn on their own… • They need mentorship and encouragement. • You should spend substantial time working with each students’ idiosyncracies • Perfectionist, OCD, “gamer”, hyperactive… there are so many different gifted behaviors! • Go-to gifted ed page: • http://www.hoagiesgifted.org/
