Cause-Slavery • South: Need slavery for plantations •  In 1850, 8000 planters owned 50 or more slaves and only 1800 planters owned 100 or more • In 1860, 8% owned 3,950,528 slaves • North: Abraham Lincoln opposes slavery • Thought Congress should keep all territories free • Believe in human rights • Wante to free the slaves
