Spelling Plurals • To create plurals for most words, only the letter s needs to be added. • If a word ends in ch, sh, or ss, the letters es must be added to create the plural. • For words that end in y, the final y must be changed to i before adding es. • Examples: • plant plants • inch inches • penny pennies

Purpose Setting: • Listen for explicit clue words and implicit details that indicate sequence. • The marketplace has been an important part of life from ancient times to the present. • What happened soon after people learned how to give themselves a permanent supply of food? • What clue words does the author use to show sequence?

Comprehension Skill: • Sequence • Sequence is the order in which things happen in a story – what happens first, next, and last. • Sometimes a writer uses clue words like first, next, and in the morning. Sometimes a writer does not. Then you can tell the order by picturing in your mind what is happening. First Next Then Last
Strategy: Summarize Good readers sum up what happens as they read a story. When you sum up, remember to tell only the important events in the order that they happened. This will help you remember what you’re reading.
