  1. FALLING Welcome to Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls

  2. FALLING… …and GRAVITY

  3. Now are you sure you want to video conference? Yeah.. Yeah I know.. You said last time it was dull… Yeah…Forces & stuff… ..and you know what it’s all about? OK then, let’s go and listen to Mr Hughes I wanna’ watch MONSTER TRUCKS

  4. MINI EXPERIMENT We are going to drop several sheets of paper of the same mass & time their fall. The variable we will change is: SURFACE AREA OF THE PAPER

  5. RESULTS:

  6. CONCLUSIONS: Objects of the same mass fall at different speeds if their surface areas are different. The larger the surface area, the greater the drag (air resistance) and the slower an object falls.

  7. THEORY: DRAG (air resistance) WEIGHT (due to GRAVITY)

  8. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE FALL? GRAVITY (downwards) makes us accelerate (speed up). DRAG (upwards) starts to increase. Eventually, DRAG = WEIGHT, so the resultant force is zero. If there is no force, speed cannot change – we reach TERMINAL VELOCITY.

  9. SPEED-TIME graphs: SPEED MOON EARTH 0 TIME

  10. WHO ISCORRECT? A A B C

  11. WHO ISCORRECT? C A B C

  12. WHO ISCORRECT? B A C D D

  13. VICKY’S NOTEBOOK Yeah, whatever.. Read Vicky’s Physics notes on FORCES. Can you rewrite them so that they make sense?

  14. (1) What is TERMINAL VELOCITY? VICKY SAYS… Yeah, but no, but yeah, but we was talking about speed right, and that Lizette Ball said it was going so fast that it will kill you and I was like ‘that is well bad, you muppet, innit, we all knows that it is how fast you goes when there ain’t no drag on you’ and she was like ‘whatever!’ and I said ‘Yeah and it is measured in metres an hour’, like she didn’t know ‘cos she is thick and couldn’t even get a job at that cheap burger place down the road next to the Oxfam shop…

  15. (1) What is TERMINAL VELOCITY? VICKY SHOULD HAVE SAID… Terminal velocity is the maximum speed  reached when objects fall on Earth , at the point where DRAG = WEIGHT . That is well bad, yeah, saying I is thick..

  16. CELEBRITY GOSSIP! Whatever these celebs are talking about, it isn’t correct…

  17. DRAG? It’s a drag listening to you lot all day…Drag is exactly the same thing as friction, and it always acts in the same direction you go in…now stop wasting my time! (1) Simon discusses DRAG…

  18. (2) When you drop somefink it falls quicker if it is biga, yeah, because its size is bigger… discussing FALLING…

  19. (3) David, what is Terminal velocity then, sweetheart? Well, Victoria, I fink it is what happens when you open your parachute and move back upwards Posh & Becks discuss TERMINAL VELOCITY…

  20. THANK YOU! GREG HUGHES:ghu@suttcold.bham.sch.uk
