  1. Summarising Collective Identity

  2. What you could be asked… • How do contemporary media represent nations, regions and ethnic / social / collective groups of people in different ways? • How does contemporary representation compare to previous time periods? • What are the social implications of different media representations of groups of people? • To what extent is human identity increasingly ‘mediated’?

  3. Collective Identity We have focused on representations of:

  4. Our Case Studies… Film Television Music Video Newspaper articles

  5. Theory… Common strands (expand on each of these with examples) • Absent Fathers • Masculinity in Crisis • Stereotype and Countertype • Youth and Gang Culture • Gender Roles • The divide between Youth and Adults

  6. Approaching the Question How far does the representation of a particular social group change over time? Refer to at least two media in you answer. It’s not telling you that it DOES change, it’s asking you if it changes, and if so, how far? Youth subculture? Compare past and modern.

  7. Structuring you answer… If I were you… Introduction • Comment on power of media • Quote on identity (referenced) • Explain your approach (which media?) Main Body • Begin with film (chose two or three, old and new) • Explain in turn, making links where necessary, the ideologies presented in these films (youth subcultures, gang culture, masculinity in crisis, absent fathers…) and how they are presented (m-e-s (fashion), soundtracks (music), locations etc). • Bring in terminology (eg stereotypes) and theory (identity) wherever possible . • Could refer to endings of films – resolution? • Move onto next media and do the same (eg music videos) Conclusion • Summarise findings.

  8. Advice… • Revise! • Start with Question 2 (1 hour) • Remember for Q1 to consider the logistics and practicality of your work (eg r and p) rather than just describing what you did. • Have a look at your coursework and consider each in terms of • Audience • Narrative • Representation (unlikely) • Conventions
