  3. Federalists The Federalist position centered around the need for stronger central government For the Union to last the national government had to have powers that the Articles of Confederation denied it One power it must have was to make laws

  4. Anti-Federalists Opponents of ratification of the Constitution George Mason, Patrick Henry These men thought Articles of Confederation were not strong enough but the Constitution went too far

  5. Anti-Federalists • They had many arguments against the Constitution: • Dangerously weakened the state governments • Too strong a central government would wipe out state power and individual freedom • No Bill of Rights • No protections for basic freedoms • President or King? • President could be reelected again and again so he could easily become a king
