  1. Summarizing is an important skill. It means to condense an original piece of writing so that it only includes the most important information. • Your group has an assigned paragraph or two on your desk that you each need to summarize individually. • 1) Read the paragraph(s) to yourself 2-3 times. • 2) Pick out the main ideas of the paragraph(s). • 3) In your academic journal, write 1-2 sentences in your own words that explain the main ideas/most important information in your paragraph(s). Today you need: academic journal, sharpened pencil, student notebook, textbook (7b)

  2. You have just received your quiz from last week. You all did surprisingly well, considering your anxiety! Congratulations! Please correct your quiz using your student notebooks. The questions were: 1) What are the five pillars of Islam? You may use the Arabic name or the English translation. 2) What is the Sunnah? 3) What is jihad? 4) What is shari’ah? Today you need: textbooks, sharpened pencils, student notebooks. Student notebooks are due today! (7A)

  3. Your current event essays this quarter will be your 7th grade work samples. There is a new graphic organizer to help you structure your essay. If your essay isn’t in the 3-4 range on the state writing assessment rubric, you’ll be getting it back for a rewrite. The stakes are higher this quarter, so we’ve got to take the essays to the next level, Current event essays

  4. Today you will practice scanning a text. • “Scanning is used by readers to locate specific information. Readers use scanning when they look up a number in the phone book or a word in the dictionary. In scanning, readers know what information they are seeking and work at a speed of about 1,500 words per minute. This speed usually results in 100% accuracy in obtaining the desired information.” (Crawley & Mountain, 1995) In your textbook, scan the text looking for the specific topic you’ve been asked to summarize. Write down the section in which you found it in the middle column in your Student Notebook. Write your summary in the right-hand column. We’ll do the first one together. scanning
