  1. Engineering in Minnesota Science Standards John Olson, MDE, Science Specialist & Doug Paulson, MDE, STEM Specialist

  2. Familiarity with Standards

  3. Relationships between science and engineering Help Create New or Improved Technologies Create Help Scientists Engineers Knowledge About the Natural World and How it Functions

  4. MDE STEM Logo

  5. A Science Inquiry • Squeeze the bottle and propose an explanation for what you observe. • Collection of Ideas • What variables could we test? • Experiments and reporting • Developing scientific ideas

  6. Science Inquiry • Observation – Form a question • Define hypothesis and procedure • Conduct an experiment • Refine hypothesis based on new evidence and experiment again • Form a conclusion and communicate it • Results – Facts and theories

  7. An Engineering Design • What are some examples of this in the real world? • Brainstorm and design a submarine and explain how it would be able to sink for 30 seconds and then come back to the surface. • Collect ideas. • Prototype creation, refinement, and marketing • Engineering Concepts

  8. Engineering Design • Define the problem and constraints • Brainstorm ideas for a solution • Design a plan from brainstorm • Create the prototype • Test & Redesign • Analyze design and market • Result: Products or Processes

  9. Typical Science Instruction • Present a situation that needs explanation • Investigate: experiment or other methods • Consolidate the explanation • Apply to a new situation (often engineering) • Consolidate the engineering concepts InquirySci. conceptsdesignEng. concepts

  10. 2009 Science Standards • Earth & Space Science • Earth Structure & Processes • Interdependence in Earth System • The Universe • Human Interactions • Physical Science • Matter • Motion • Energy • Human Interactions • Life Science • Structure & Function • Interdependence in Living Systems • Evolution • Human Interactions Nature of Science & Engineering

  11. Format of Standards and Benchmarks

  12. Why is engineering in the science standards? • Problem solving skills needed by everyone • Helps understand our world • Applies science and strengthens concepts • Alternative learning styles/motivation for learning • Career possibilities • Workforce and competitive concerns

  13. Connecting STL w/ MN Science Academic Standards Minnesota Science Standards STL pg 15 Pg. 42 – Systems, which are the building blocks of technology, are embedded within larger technological, social, and environmental systems.

  14. Other Engineering Instructional Strategies Developing parts of a project • On-paper designs – scoping the project • Identifying constraints, failure analysis, life cycle assessment • Case study – e.g. 35W bridge, Oil Spill • Engineering/technology/society discussion • Impacts and influences • Contributions of cultures • Political process, ethics, environmental concerns • Historical approach to inventions • Student presentations 15

  15. MN STEM Initiatives Teacher Support Programs Magnet Schools Charter Schools Grant programs NGA E2T2 Ed Tech ERRA Community Support MN STEM Network Business Adopt a School getSTEM-mn • Project Lead the Way • Developing Frameworks to integrate math and science • Engineering is Elementary • Science Museum – pilots and PD • The Works Museum – E4 Conference • Higher Education • U of M STEM Center • St. Catherine’s University • Math and Science Teacher Academy

  16. Teaching the Standards • What are some similarities and differences between these instructional strategies and what you do in your classes? • What are some ways that people in schools and districts can collaborate to implement standards?

  17. Links • NSDL – www.nsdl.org • Online version for Atlas for Science Literacy • getSTEM – www.getSTEM-mn.com • www.getSTEM-AZ.com • Connecting business and school initiatives • U of M STEM Center – www.umn.edu/STEM • Colloquium for STEM Education Research • Elementary Engineering Conference • www.theworks.org/E4

  19. What is getSTEM? www.getSTEM-mn.com Web portal launched 2/2/09 First K-12 STEM social computing site in nation Mn educators, businesses connect, collaborate, match STEM needs with resources A partnership between MHTA and MDE. Supported by contributions from Microsoft, Thomson Reuters, Inetium, 3M, Ecolab, and Honeywell

  20. Just Ask, Just Offer… It Just Makes Sense! Teachers use the website to create postings toASKfor community assistance and volunteers for their classroom Local businesses use the website toOFFERtheir K-12 outreach programs that teachers may incorporate into their classroom Popular getSTEM connections: guest presentations, informational interviews, basic material donations (notebooks & pencils) Most connections consist of one hour volunteer time or $25 donation to K-12 education
