  3. Ukraine is not a member of NATO or the EU • NATO and EU has been attempting to improve economic integration and military relations with Ukraine NATO,EU, US, and Ukraine

Russia wants Ukraine to join the Eurasian Union trade bloc • Natural gas pipelines run through Ukraine into Russia • “Last year Russia’s state-controlled Gazprom sold about 160 billion cubic meters of natural gas to Europe—a quarter of European demand.” • Russia invaded and annexed Crimea in order to protect ethnic Russians who were reportedly mistreated Russia and Ukraine

  5. Russian and Ukrainian forces are building up along border. • “NATO says it wants to protect member states against what it calls "Russia's aggression." Its top military commander claims Moscow is ready and able to take Ukraine within three to five days.” • “NATO is also ramping up the rhetoric and backing it up with deployment of extra forces in the Baltic States.” • “The West is still kicking out at what happened because they realize they can do very little about it on the ground; it’s been made clear by Obama and others that military action from NATO at the present time is really out of a question.” Current State of Conflict

Russia wants a buffer zone between the EU/Nato and itself • Russia doesn’t really care about its officials in Ukraine; it cares about having a buffer zone to protect itself from the West • The US wants to maintain a strong image, but does not want conflict to escalate • NATO, EU, and US have limited responses • Military action against Russia will result in all out war; potential use of nuclear weapons • Limited sanctions • Diplomacy will do little to resolve issue; it can only decrease current tensions Conclusions
