INTRODUCTION I want to take this opportunity to thank your pastor and first lady for allowing me to talk to you about two of the greatest epidemics in America’s History which would be obesity and unhealthy eating. The fast food industry is a billion dollar industry. We continue to make the CEO of fast food restaurants wealthy and our health as a nation is on a decline. There are more people dying today that every before with deceases such as cancer, high blood pressure and many more. You may say that there are more people in the world so the numbers should be more. Our life style has changed. People were not consuming so much processed foods. They probably ate more fruits and vegetables. The walked to work and many did more labor intense jobs. So often we take these issues for granted. Complacey has set in and we choose not to do anything about the problems or the issues until they become major problems. You start experiencing things that you thought you would never ever have to deal with then one day you wake up with excruciating pains in your chest or you go to the doctor and he or she tells you that you have gain 10 pounds since your ast visit. Your blood pressure is high and it may seem like health problems seem to be developing rapidly. Brothers and sisters - Let’s Keep It Real! t is time for a change! Your life depends on it!

Overview of Workshop • Discuss Scriptures from old and new testaments • Provide statistical data related to health issues impacting the nation and African Americans • Discuss deceases caused by unhealthy eating and identify warning signs • Identify foods to avoid (include fast food items) • improve or implement a wellness or health program • Discuss benefits of eating healthy and exercising daily • Reading and analyzing food labels • Importance of water and required nutrients for the body • Benefits of fruits and vegetables (Healthiest Nation) • Discuss recommended daily values based on 2000 or 2500 calories per day • Let’s Keep It Real Meal Plans • Healthiest Nations

  4. Genesis 1: 29 • And God said, Behold, I have given every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

Other choices are cucumbers, bell peppers, green beans, eggplants, okra, melons, tomatoes, squash and pumpkins Fruit of tree yielding seed – palm fruits, citrus fruits, sweet fruits, brazil nuts, pecans, almonds, cashews and walnuts.

  9. Waistline • Women waistline should be less than 35 inches…may become at risk at 31.5 • Men waistline should be less than 40 inches may become at risk at 37 inches • Fat could possibly absorb in blood. Fat can be toxic and cause health problems such as diabetes, heart decease, some cancer.

Herbs and Fruits Bearing Seeds • Herbs Bearing Seeds – “plant that does not develop into woody plant.” • Examples – corn, barley, oats, millet, rye, rice, wheat, sesame, sunflower. • Other choices – cucumbers, bell peppers, green beans, eggplants, okra, melons, tomatoes, squash, and pumpkins Fruit Bearing Seeds- citrus fruits, nuts, pecans, almonds, cashews and walnuts

  12. Own Agenda • Why do we select the foods we eat? • Tradition or Cultural (i.e family cooking style • Appearance or taste (i.e. that dish really looks good I want to try it • Social events or emotions (i.e. birthday celebration or feeling angry, sad, lonely, or happy)

OVEREATING OR GLUTTONY • When thou sittiest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee: 2 And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite. 3 Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat. (Prov 23:1-3) • Don’t be so easily persuaded to eat large portions and unhealthy foods

OVERWEIGHT STATS • 2006-2008 reported 33% adults overweight • 2007 almost 40% of African Americans overweight • 2008 9 million children and adolescents between ages of 6 and 19 years are overweight. Overweight adolescents have 70% chance of being overweight adults • By 2030 86% of Americans will be overweight

Healthy Eating A New Beginning • Weigh yourself and keep tract of the recommended weight for your height • Memorize your BMI or waist circumference • Dismiss the thought that it’s a diet – Diets are temporary • Admit that there is a problem so that you can found a solution • Connect with a support group, friend or family member • Learn more about appropriate nutrients required for the body • Meditate and read your bible daily

  21. CONCLUSION ITS TIME FOR A CHANGE NOW. YOU MUST DO SOMETHING BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE. ALLOW GOD TO SHARE HIS THOUGHTS. ALLOW GOD TO SPEAK TO YOUR HEARTS IT MAY NOT MAKE SENSE NOW OR MAYBE YOU ARE THINKING THAT IS TOO HARD. GOD SAYS IN ISAIAH 55: 8 & 9 – MY THOUGHTS ARE NOT YOUR THOUGHTS MAY WAYS ARE NOT YOUR WAYS
