  2. What is a drug • A drug is a substance which affects the way the mind and body works. It can be natural or manufactured • A drug can be legal or illegal • caffeine is the most widely used drug • Prescription drugs are stronger legal drugs given by a doctor • Drug abuse is taking too many drugs which causes harm to the user.

Key Terms • Experimental- to see what it’s like • Recreational- some drugs are used in a social setting • Experiential- some drugs are used because of there affect , for example they make us feel better or calm us down • Addiction- some drug takers become addicted and cannot stop themselves using the drug.

Drug classifications • The more dangerous and addictive the drug the higher the classification • Class a • Heroin, cocaine = 7 years for possession, life for dealing • Class b • Speed, cannabis = 5 years for possession, 14 years for dealing • Class c • Tranquillisers = 2 years for possession if being used illegally 14 years for dealing

  5. Social drugs • Are legal drugs which are taken in a group to be sociable • Alcohol • Caffeine • Nicotine • There are good things associated with each • But there are problems associated with each of these social drugs

  6. Good and bad things about alcohol • good • Improves confidence • Is sociable • Tastes good • Clams people down • Brings lots of money • bad • Liver damage • Addiction • Expensive • Leaves people vulnerable when drunk • Peer pressured into doing it

Facts about drugs • 'Illegal drugs' include heroin, cocaine, ecstasy, LSD and cannabis (these are divided into Class A, B or C depending on how addictive they are). • 'Recreational drugs' are drugs that people use for pleasure or relaxation. Most recreational drugs are illegal. However, alcohol and tobacco are legal recreational drugs. (Some religious people would include caffeine as a 'recreational' drug and would avoid its use.) • 'Prescription drugs' are those prescribed by a doctor to treat a medical condition, and are legal.

  8. stats • According to National Health Service (NHS) reports (2007): • In 2005/06, 10.5% of adults aged 16 to 59 living in England and Wales had used one or more illicit (illegal) drug in the last year, a decrease from 12.1% in 1998. • 6.3% had used an illicit (illegal) drug in the last month, a fall from 7.1% in 1998. • The use of any Class A drug (like heroin) in the last year has increased, from 2.7% in 1998 to 3.4% in 2005/06, mainly due to a rise in the use of cocaine powder. • Men are more likely to take illicit (illegal) drugs than women: 13.7% of men compared with 7.4% of women took illegal drugs in the last year. • For Class A drugs, the highest levels were found among those living in London. • For younger adults aged 16 to 24, drug use in the last year fell between 1998 and 2005/06, from 31.8% to 25.2%, whilst the use of Class A drug use has remained stable.

  9. Reasons for using illegal drugs • People might use illegal drugs because- they are bored- they want to see what it's like- they have been peer pressured into it- they are upset/ want to escape life

  10. Reasons against people using illegal drugs • Crimes go up in order to buy the drugs • Families will be hurt and if the drug abuser still lives at home the addiction will take over the whole family

What can be done about addiction • There are ways of helping people beat their addictions • But some believe addicts should be left to it as its their own fault they are like this • Others believe addicts should be supported through their rehabilitation as getting of drugs alone is very hard • Prison sentences for dealers and users could be increased • Rehab could be made compulsory for all addicts • Increased education about the risks of drugs

What do Christians say about illegal drugs? • They teach against using illegal drugs • The key Christian teaching in relation to the use of drugs is that the physical body is the natural home of the soul, and is therefore precious and sacred. • “Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit”. Christians also teach that they should show love and compassion to addicts • The Roman Catholic church says: • “The use of drugs inflicts very grave damage on human health and life. Their use, except on strictly therapeutic grounds, is a grave offence. Clandestine production of and trafficking in drugs are scandalous practices. They constitute direct co-operation in evil, since they encourage people to practices gravely contrary to the moral law”.

What do Christians say about alcohol and nicotine? • Some Christians think its ok to drink and smoke within reasons • And in some church services wine is actually used. • Others like Methodists don’t believe in drinking alcohol as it damages your body and that smoking is harming the body God gave you • “It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother to fall”
