  1. Asphalt Base Repair: Fix The Problem James Anderson DPW/ACEC Training Event February 27, 2018

  2. Basic Premise:We don’t build bridges out of Hot Mix Asphalt. Why?

  3. Asphalt is a flexible pavement.Putting a new layer of asphalt on something that is yielding, flexing, or moving WILL result in premature failure of that new pavement.

  4. NOPE!!

  5. Basic Premise

  6. Fatigue (Alligator) Cracking

  7. Extreme Fatigue Example

  8. HUH?!

  9. POTHOLES!!

  10. It’s important to note the pavement distresses that exist PRIOR to milling the surface…Not just after milling.

  11. Milling may remove the EVIDENCE of the distress….But not necessarily the CAUSE.

  12. What am I able to see?

  13. Here’s Another Example

  14. Rutting

  15. Rule of thumb:Do you have mountains?ORDo you have valleys?

  16. Valleys….

  17. Mountains…

  18. Base repair needed…or not?

  19. Those cover the most common, visible indicators of pavement distress where some type of Base Repair is likely to be needed…BUT….

  20. It’s only the right answer if it’sDONE RIGHT

  21. Let’s look at this again…

  22. Remember: It HAS to be well compacted

  23. “Well Compacted” means…. That the Hot Mix Asphalt is…well…HOT Material placed in “Lifts”, if necessary (2-4 x Agg size) Able to actually get equipment into the patch to compact ALL of the area…ESPECIALLY the joint of new and old pavement That we aren’t trying to build a “Bridge” of HMA Base over something that is yielding beneath it

  24. Additional Resources • FHWA Publication: • RD-03-031, “Distress Identification Manual” • LTAP Publication: • LTAP-05-001 “Distress Identification Guide”
