  3. Objective: To encourage 4-H members enrolled in the horse project to expand in an area that is rapidly growing as a career and offering opportunities for many 4-H membersTo encourage 4-H members who do not have a horse but are interested in horses and related activities.

  4. Eligible 4-H Ageto Enter Contest:Junior (8-13)Senior (14-18)(Age as of December 31 of current year)

  5. Pastels/Charcoal/Graphite/Colored Pencil (Abstract or Realistic) • (Artwork done in either pastel, charcoal, graphite, colored pencil medium or combination. Must include image of horse or for abstract, your rendition of a horse. MUST BE PROTECTED TO PREVENT SMEARING. • Oil/Acrylic/Watercolor (Abstract or Realistic) • (Artwork done either in oil, acrylic or watercolor medium. Must include image of horse or for abstract, your rendition of a horse. MUST BE DRY. • Pen/Ink/Markers/Crayon (Abstract or Realistic) • (Artwork done in pen/ink, marker, crayon medium or combination. Must include image of horse or for abstract, your rendition of a horse. MUST BE PROTECTED TO PREVENT SMEARING. • Cartoon – Single frame or strip • (Artwork done in any medium. Must include image of horse and tell a short story or make a point). • 5.Sculpture/3-D – no larger than 2 ft by 2 ft (Abstract or Realistic) • (Artwork done in any 3-D medium. MUST BE DRY when entered. Must be your rendition of a horse. • Mixed, Altered Media, Other – no larger than 2 ft by 2 ft. Collage, Paper, Paint, Fun Foam, Felt, Metal, Combined mediums, altered horse items, etc.) • (Artwork combining several types of mediums. Artwork that doesn’t fit other categories. Must include image of horse. MUST BE DRY when entered. • Home Furnishings – Accessories for your home • (Artwork that you crafted for an accessory for your home.   8. Abstract or Realistic Artwork can beDone for the Following Categories: • 1. Pastels/Charcoal/Graphite/Colored Pencil (artwork done in either pastel, charcoal, graphite, colored pencil medium or combination. MUST BE PROTECTED TO PREVENT SMEARING. • 2. Oil/Acrylic/Watercolor (Artwork done either in oil, acrylic or watercolor medium. MUST BE DRY. • 3. Pen/Ink/Markers/Crayon (Artwork done in pen/ink, marker, crayon medium or combination. MUST BE PROTECTED TO PREVENT SMEARING. • 5. Sculpture/3-D (no larger than 2 ft x 2 ft) (Artwork done in any 3-D medium) MUST BE DRY WHEN ENTERED. ALL of the above categories MUST include image of horse or for abstract, your rendition of a horse!

  9. Categories that do NOT have Abstract or Realistic as an Option: • 4. Cartoon – single frame or strip. Artwork done in any medium and tell a short story or make a point. • 6. Mixed, Altered Media, Other – no larger than 2 ft by 2 ft. Collage, paper, paint, fun foam, felt, metal, combined mediums, altered horse items, etc. Artwork combining several types of mediums. Artwork that doesn’t fit other categories. MUST BE DRY WHEN ENTERED. • 7. Home Furnishings – Accessories for your home. Artwork that you crafted for an accessory for your home. MUST be a “finished or completed” product. ALL of the above categories MUST include image of horse.

  10. Artwork done in your basic mediums are self explanatory such as: • Pastels • Charcoal/Graphite • Colored Pencil • Oil, Acrylic or Watercolor • Pen and Ink • Markers and Crayon

  11. Following are examples of the other categories such as: • Cartoon • Sculpture • Mixed or Altered Media • Home Furnishings

  12. The Story of Suppertime Sam Where’s Everybody Going? They’re not gonna beat me! Yep! Right on Time for Supper! The Cartoon Category does NOT have the option of Abstract or Realistic: • Cartoon – Single frame or strip • (Artwork done in any medium. Must include image of horse and tell a short story or make a point). Example of cartoon strip. Please note that exhibitor MUST use his/her own illustrations.

  13. The Sculpture/3-D Category does NOT have the option of Abstract or Realistic: 5.Sculpture/3-D – no larger than 2 ft by 2 ft (Abstract or Realistic) (Artwork done in any 3-D medium. MUST BE DRY when entered. Must be your rendition of a horse. Example of 3-D Sculptures. Please note that exhibitor MUST use his/her own creations.

Photo Source: © 2006 Morgan Larkins 4-H Horse Artwork Contest – Sample Artwork That Does Not Fit the Contest: Which artwork or exhibit piece is CORRECT for the contest? NO – nice artwork, but even though it is a wagon and horses usually pulled wagons, there is NOT an image of a horse in the artwork.  YES – this artwork has been done in the correct medium for the chosen category. It has also been matted and protected correctly!

  18. 4-H Horse Artwork Contest – Sample Artwork That Does Not Fit the Contest: Which artwork or exhibit piece is CORRECT for the contest?  NO – nice store-bought figurine, but not acceptable as is. If this item were greatly altered by painting, decoupage, mosaic, etc. then it would be a good candidate for the Mixed/Altered Media Category.  YES – this artwork has been done in the correct medium for the chosen category (Sculpture/3-D). It is the correct size, it is DRY and is a COMPLETED PIECE!

  19. 4-H Horse Artwork Contest – Sample Artwork That Does Not Fit the Contest: Which artwork or exhibit piece is CORRECT for the contest?  YES – this artwork has been done in the correct medium for the chosen category (Sculpture/3-D or Home Furnishings. This could be done in iron or clay! It is the correct size, it is DRY and is a COMPLETED PIECE!  NO – nice artwork of a barn with a horse weather vane, but the primary focus is on the barn and not the tiny horse figure.

  20. Directionsof How Artwork Should be Turned in for Contest

  21. Artwork MUST BE protected by simple matting, framing or protective covering such as plastic wrap. Artwork MUST be DRY and COMPLETE when entered. Artwork MUST meet the following criteria:

  22. Each piece of artwork MUST have a COMPLETED CURRENT entry form attached to back of artwork with the signature of 4-H’er, parent or guardian, and 4-H Agent. Agent must have seen and approved all entries prior to submission. (Entry forms are available from your county agent.) Artwork MUST meet the following criteria continued:

  23. ALL Artwork MUST fit category entered and adhere to ALL rules, or will be subject to disqualification. Artwork MUST meet the following criteria continued: And last but not least …….

  25. Rules for Horse Art Contest: Entry Deadline:10 a.m. until noon on Wednesday of State Horse Show 1. Artwork MUST have been completed since August 1, of previous year. 2. Artwork MUST be the work of the 4-H member submitting the entry(s). 3. Artwork that documents 4-H horse-related activities are most desirable, but other horse-related activities may be submitted also. Artwork must have a horse as the primary focus of work. 4. 4-H’ers may submit ONE ENTRY PER CATEGORY. Multiple entries by an individual 4-H’er in one category will subject all entries in that category to disqualification. 5. Artwork MUST meet the following criteria: a. Artwork MUST BE protected by simple matting, framing or protective covering such as plastic wrap. b. Artwork MUST be DRY and COMPLETE when entered. c. Artwork MUST have a COMPLETED entry form attached to back of artwork with required signatures. (entry forms are available from your county agent) d. Artwork MUST fit category entered and adhere to the rules, or will be subject to disqualification.

Rules for Horse Art Contest continued: Entry Deadline:10 a.m. until noon on Wednesday of State Horse Show • Entries will be accepted from 10 a.m. through 12 noon on Wednesday of the Sate 4-H Horse Championships in the Equine Center on the Sate Fair Grounds. Winners will be announced the next day. • Winning artwork will be available for viewing on Thursday. Non-winning artwork can be picked up on Thursday. All artwork must be signed for and picked up no later that 1:30 p.m. on Saturday of the State 4-H Horse Show. • Age divisions of contestants: • a. 8-13 years old (age as of December 31, of previous year) • b. 14-18 years old (age as of December 31, of previous year)
