Gutenberg’s Printing Press • Gutenberg invented a movable type of printing press in 1438. • Printers in other countries soon learned to use this new invention. • Books could be printed more quickly and their price fell. • People could now afford to buy books. • Ideas and learning spread easily when more people read books. • People increased their interest in science.

  4. Church influence declined • In Middle Age, people accepted what the Church told them. • The Great Schism reduced people’s faith to the Church. (mentioned before) • In Renaissance people questioned Church beliefs and used scientific ways to solve problem.

His achievement • One of his achievements in science was about his discovery in astronomy. • Before this discovery, the Church told the people that the earth was the centre of the universe. • Yet Copernicus found out that the sun, and not the earth, was the centre of the universe.http://www.ied.edu.hk/invent/inventor/inventor.html • Was his discovery ‘revolutionary’?

  13. Galileo’s discovery • He discovered that things of the same shape and size but with different weights fell to the ground at the same speed.

Galileo’s sin? • The Church believed in Aristotle’s theory that the sun moved round the Earth. • Galileo supported Copernicus’ sun-centred idea. • Galileo was persecuted by the Church for this because he did not accept his ‘fault’. • He was punished for holding different ideas.
