  2. Welcome back!  Have journals and social shaming article questions out. • Place commas in the sentences where needed. Vocab 7 • fatuous (adj) • Even though my mom told me not to call my brother “stupid” anymore, I found a way around this by calling him fatuous instead. • audacity (N) • I could not believe the teenager’s audacity when he told his grandma to shut up; how could he be so disrespectful to his elders? • banal (adj) • She did not want her paper to be banal, so she worked hard to be as creative as possible, coming up with an excellent hook that would catch her reader’s interest immediately. • incumbent (adj) • It was incumbent that he received good grades his junior year, as he wanted to go to Notre Dame and he knew that he would need to be outstanding to do so.

Vocab 7 cont’d • glean (v) • The reporter gleaned information from any source possible, trying to cover the story about the train crash in NYC as fully as possible. • coterie (N) • The coterie of Regina, Gretchen, and Karen only let certain people sit with them at lunch; they didn’t want just anyone to be in their friend group. • pertinent (adj) • When Sarah asked when the winter dance would be in the middle of our conversation about single parents, I told her that I could only answer pertinent questions and moved on.

Vocab 7 cont’d • garish (adj) • When I went to the ugly sweater party, there were all sorts of garish sweaters: there were ones with sparkles, ones with glitter, ones with bright red and green that clashed and looked awful. • embellish (v) • Though she’d really only seen Barack Obama from afar as he was giving a speech, she embellished her story by saying that he gave her a hug and even winked at her too. • emulate (v) • When I was young, I wanted to emulate my older sister’s every move; from her love of Dairy Queen ice cream to her long hair, I wanted to be just like her.

Prepare for Discussion • Should there be social shaming advertisements? • You will have 10-15 minutes today, and 10-15 minutes tomorrow in class to prepare for the discussion. • Use at least three articles to defend your argument. • Use two quotes from each article at minimum and EXPLAIN them. • You will turn in your preparation sheets on the day of the discussion (Thursday)

  12. HW: • Read and annotate “Does Shame Have a Place in our Society?” short opinion pieces to the article.
