  9. Adaptations to biomes October 10th, 2012

  10. By the end of the day… • SWBAT predict adaptations an organism would need to use to survive a biome. • SWBAT answer our question of the day.

  11. Where are we going? • The past few days we decided that different plants and animals have to fight to survive in different conditions because they all live in different biomes! • Today we’re going to talk about the ADAPTATIONS that plants and animals have to those specific biomes!

  12. Question of the day • When an organism lives in the conditions of the tundra, what adaptations might it have? • What might it have to do to survive?

  13. Hypothesis time… • When an organism lives in the conditions of the tundra, what adaptations might it have? • WHAT IS YOUR GUESS????

  14. Thinking wayyyyy back to friday • We learned about 5 different biomes: tundra, taiga, desert, tropical rainforest, temperate deciduous forest • These biomes were each VERY different from each other. • An animal that can survive in the tundra is NOT going to be able to survive very well in the desert.

  15. Who remembers?? • Last week we talked about some things that plants and animals can change about themselves in order to survive… • What were those things they changed called? • What were the two types that we talked about??

  16. Someone remind me… • What biome is this? • What is the climate like in this biome?

  17. The desert- Plant adaptations • Cactii(2)store water inside of themselves to have water when they are thirsty. • They also have spikes to keep predators that want to steal their water from them to survive.

  18. The desert-Plant adaptations • During dry spells many plants die and don't return until there is more moisture. • THE BIG IDEA: Plants need a way to (3) preserve the little water that is available in the desert!

  19. The desert- animal adaptations • Desert animals prevent water leaving their bodies many different ways. • Kangaroo rats (4)live in burrows which do not get too hot or too cold. These animals stay in their burrows during daytime and come out at night to eat. • BIG IDEA: Animals need to conserve water AND avoid too much sunlight

  20. Who can remind me… • What biome is this?? • What is the climate like in this biome??

  21. The tundra- plant adaptations • The Arctic Moss doesn't need soil to live. It adapted so it can live on water. This makes it easier to live in the tundra during winter when the soil is frozen. • BIG IDEA: Plants are tiny and (5)grow close to the groundto soak up the little water that is not frozen.

  22. The tundra- animal adaptations • Polar Bears have (6)very thick skinto keep it warm in the tundra. They also have white skin enabling them to blend in with their surroundings when hunting for prey. • The Artic Fox cannot stand the cold of a tundra night. It burrows itself at night and only comes out during the day. • BIG IDEA: Animals (7)camouflage themselves and insulate their bodies to keep warm.

  23. Who can remind me?? • What Biome is this?? • - What is the climate like in this biome??

  24. The taiga- plant adaptations • The Paper Birch has (8)waxy pine needles. These help it in many ways. It retains water, it insulates them, it even keeps certain bugs away. • BIG IDEA: Water storage, insulation from harsh temperatures

  25. The taiga- animal adaptations • The Gray wolf and the Bobcat both have thick fur to keep themselves warm. • The Gray Wolf's color allows it to blend in to its surroundings which helps its hunting skills. • BIG IDEA: Keeping their bodies warm, (9)camouflaging, adapting hunting behaviors

  26. Who can remind me??? -What biome is this?? - WHERE is this biome located??

  27. Deciduous forest- Plant adaptations • Deciduous trees like Oak, Maple, and Beech shed their leaves in the season fall. Those leaves fall on the forest floor and are broken down into nutrients by decomposers. The nutrients stay in the ground making it very rich. • BIG IDEA: Shedding leaves to keep the ground (10) nutrient-rich

  28. Deciduous forest- animal adaptations • Some animals such as squirrels, chipmunks and blue jays (11)store food when it is plentiful, using hollows of trees as storehouses for nuts and seeds. In winter this store of food keeps them fed. • BIG IDEA: Finding a way to store food when the leaves off the trees are gone

  29. Finallyyyy, who can remind me?? - What biome is this?? - Where is this biome located??

  30. Tropical rainforest- plant adaptations • Plants have waxy leaves to keep water from settling on leaves for too long. • BIG IDEA: finding a way to (12)get rid of excess water, finding SPACE in the VERY crowded rainforest

  31. Tropical rainforest- Animal Adaptations • The Sloth, a very light weight mammal, (13)hangs from branches to avoid predators. • Most predators in the rainforest cannot get to an animal that is hanging from a branch that high. • BIG IDEA: Animals hang from high up to avoid predators and learn to swing from branches to move around

  32. ROAD check • The scorpion likes to stay out of extreme heat, so it sleeps during the day and only comes out at night. • What biome do you think the scorpion may live in? • Desert

  33. ROAD check • Wooly mammoths are VERY large animals that have adapted multiple layers of fur to stay warm. • Which biome do you think the wooly mammoth would survive best in? • Tundra

  34. road check • 1. Which plant would survive better in the tundra? 2. WHY???

  35. road check • 1. Which plant would survive better in the tundra? 2. WHY???

  36. road check • Which animal would survive better in the rainforest?? WHY??

  37. road check • Which animal would survive better in the rainforest?? WHY??

  38. road check Brianna noticed that desert plants have very small leaves or no leaves at all. The most likely explanation is that: • A. Larger leaves dry up and drop off • B. Photosynthesis does not occur in the desert • C. Small leaves minimize water loss • D. Small leaves minimize heat loss

  39. road check L’Vionta noticed that desert plants have very small leaves or no leaves at all. The most likely explanation is that: • A. Larger leaves dry up and drop off • B. Photosynthesis does not occur in the desert • C. Small leaves minimize water loss • D. Small leaves minimize heat loss

  40. road check Bird #1 in the tundra has the same amount of feathers as its cousin who lives in the rainforest. Bird #2 in the tundra has three extra layers of feathers and it goes to sleep for the entire winter. Which bird is more likely to survive and why? • A. Bird # 1 because it doesn’t have extra feathers to stop it from flying • B. Bird #2 because more feathers will help it fly more • C. Bird #2 because more feathers will keep the bird warm in the cold winters • D. Bird # 1 because it has a cousin in the rainforest

  42. Road check A species of wolf needs a lot of space for its territory. Their thick fur allows them to adapt easily to cold temperatures and snow. They also have strong running legs and large canine teeth that allow them to hunt hoofed animals. Which of the following biomes would be most suitable for this species of wolf? • A. Taiga • B. Chaparral • C. Desert • D. Tropical Rainforest
