  3. Cower v. Cringe in fear, shy away As the football dove down toward her face, Kelly cowered and ducked to the ground.

  4. Defiant adj. Boldly resisting; opposing (authority) The defiant soldier refused the order given to him by the general.

  5. Handicap n. A physical or mental disability; a hindrance Her physical handicap kept her from being able to walk.

  6. Impediment n. A hindrance or obstruction. A physical defect (such as a stammer) Kelly’s speech impediment Always embarrassed her during conversations.

  7. Profuse adj. Plentiful, extravagant When Eric was shot at war, the amount of blood was profuse.

  8. Paraphernalia n. Personal belongings; articles used for a specific activity I searched my locker for my cell phone, but it was so crowded by all of my cheerleading paraphernalia.

  9. Perfunctory adj. Done routinely with little interest or care When I picked up the phone, a telemarketer answered with a perfunctory greeting.

  10. Reluctant adj. Unwilling; not eager Chloe was reluctant to go on her blind date after she heard bad stories about him.

  11. Vigilant adj. Alert, watchful The vigilant neighbors called the police after they noticed a burglar breaking into a nearby house.
