Background • Born November 1755 to Empress Maria Theresa of Austria and Francis I Emperor of Germany. • Married Louis Dauphin of France in 1770, it was a political alliance as the two countries were enemies. • May 1774, Death of Louis XV and beginning of Louis XIV reign. • October 14-16th 1793 her trial and execution.

  3. The Queen of Vice • Prostitute- Portrayed in pamphlets as governed by her desires influences men with her sexuality. • Lesbian- According to the press she had many female lovers from the nobility. To her men came second. • Incest- Apparently her brother deflowered her. • These images were propagated by the press for reasons of emasculation and that men were losing their power in politics.

Non-human Images • The animal – The press portrayed Marie-Antoinette as ruled only by her own sexual and savage instincts, incapable of rational thought. • Lover of Blood – Depicted as blood-thirsty unifying her sexual desires with her violent and evil nature. • Stemmed from the fact that she was a powerful woman and her Austrian and German heritage.
