  1. ART ELEMENTS The “building blocks” of art. The tools by which we make art.

  2. LINE Geometric Line- A mark made on a surface that has length and direction.

  3. LINE Organic

  4. SHAPE A two-dimensional enclosed area, or object. GEOMETRIC SHAPES (MATHEMATICAL) • SQUARES • CIRCLES • STARS • HEARTS • TRIANGLES, ETC.

  5. SHAPEORGANIC (FROM NATURE)

  6. COLOR The quality of light reflected from an object. Primary Colors: (Red, yellow, and blue) come from nature. Nothing can be mixed together to achieve these colors.

  7. COLOR Secondary Colors: Those colors achieved by a mixture of two primaries.

  8. COLOR Tertiary Colors: These colors are created when mixing one secondary and one primary color. These always have 2 names (i.e. blue-violet, red-orange, etc.).

  9. COLOR Complementary Colors: Are opposite each other on the color wheel. They look good side by side, but neutralize each other if mixed.

  10. COLOR Analogous Colors: Are next to each other on the color wheel.

  11. COLOR Warm & Cool Colors Warm Colors Cool Colors

  12. VALUE VALUE CAN BE IN COLOR ABOVE: VALUE SCALE (from dark to light) VALUE- THE LIGHTNESS OR DARKNESS OF A COLOR.

  13. VALUE TINTS: Color mixed with white SHADE: Color mixed with black HUE

  14. FORM Implied form Three-dimensional shapes or objects. Form can be implied or actual.

  15. Actual Three-Dimensionalform FORM

  16. TEXTURE The tactile quality of a surface. It can be actual or implied.

  17. TEXTURE Implied texture

  18. SPACE The illusion of depth & distance. Spatial Planes: Closer objects are lower on the page and larger than objects behind them.

  19. LINEAR PERSPECTIVE SPACE Edges and lines appear to converge (come together) at a point in the distance.

  20. ATMOSPHERIC PERSPECTIVE Colors are darker, warmer, and sharper up close. Farther away, objects appear cooler, lighter, and fuzzier.

  21. POSITIVE & NEGATIVE SPACE THE TREE IS POSITIVE THE AIRPLANE IS NEGATIVE

  22. CAN BE REVERSED

  23. What is overlapping, and what is in perspective?
