Invention of Printing/Moveable Type • ca. 1450: Johannes Gutenberg • During the Middle Ages books had to be hand copied on parchment. • Impact: increased output and accuracy and decreased the cost. • Inexpensive printed materials • opportunities for literacy & learning and encouraged talented people to write. http://www.history.com/videos/the-book-that-changed-the-world#the-book-that-changed-the-world

  4. Castiglione • Italian • Wrote The Book of the Courtier- a guidebook for those at court (how to dress, behave, etc)

  5. Medici Family • 15th Century: Florence came under the control (rule) of the Medici family. • Originally a merchant family who got rich in the wool trade and then expanded into banking. • The Medici's (especially Lorenzo the Magnificent, 1469-1492) became outstanding patrons of Renaissance Art.
