  1. Teaching Digital Natives:Using Technology in Partnering & Understanding the “Nouns”, or ToolsChapters 6 & 7 Group 4 Courtney Neiman, Noel Romero, Melissa Romero, Chris Harrington

  2. ????? What is technology’s role in partnering? How can teachers ensure that students use ALL the technology available? How do teachers choose the appropriate tools for students to use?

  3. ReviewPrensky’s Grammar Analogy: • “Verbs” are the • SKILLS • and “Nouns” are the • TOOLS • of learning.

  4. Nouns: The Tools Students Use • Unlike skills, tools change with the times and improvements in technology • Students need access to as many tools as possible • Tools are not skills! A tool cannot Make up for inadequate Training. • Change is accelerated by technology and it is moving faster than ever

  5. Partnering teachers need to… • Remember that technology is the enabler • Give guiding questions • Make sure students know their goals • Find out what tools are available now and in the future • Let their students use all the technology • Facilitate and guide but allow students to learn on their own

  6. Partnering Students need to… • Use the technology that is available to them to facilitate their learning • Take responsibility for their own learning • Develop independence and high standards • Learn to critically assess the tools they use

  7. Partnering teachers DO NOT NEED to… • Be experts in the technology they expect their students to use • Feel guilty that they are not “teaching Enough” • Use the technology that their students are using in the classroom (Prensky’s Apostasy)

  8. Prensky’s 4 special cases technologies that partnering teachers should focus on • Web 2.0/3.0 • 1:1 The coming wave • Cell phones • games

  9. Web 2.0, web 3.0 & 1:1 The coming wave • Web 2.0 is the medium for everyone to Read, watch, publish and share their work with the world. • Web 3.0 is almost a reality. It is “the ‘semantic web’ where you can search any work ever created” (Prensky 103) and link it to other related areas • 1:1is one laptop/netbook per student. Teachers need to use this technology in the classroom

  10. Cell Phones Games Are potential motivators Help answer guiding q’s Can be used to practice skills Can be used for presentations Can be created using game tools • ARE pocket sized computers • Are not the enemy! • Can be used for open “phone” tests • Can be used as a PRs device

  11. What if there is no technology available? • Teachers can create simulations using guiding questions. • Thinking about the appropriate technology for a task gets to the question ofWHY? • THE TECHNOLOGIES ARE NOT AN END, THEY ARE A MEANS TO AN END • “THE END IS Answering the Guiding questions and practicing the verb”
