  2. The Gunslinger • Published in 1982 • Written by Stephen King • The first of an eight-book series known as the Dark Tower series • Based on a poem by Robert Browning “Child Roland to the Dark Tower Came”

Stephen King • Father went out to buy cigarettes leaving his mother to raise Stephen and his brother alone • Hit by a van in 1999 and nearly had his leg amputated it was so shattered • After graduating from college, King was a high school English teacher • Plays rhythm guitar in a band – The Rock Bottom Remainders - comprised of writers

  4. The Road • Published in 2007 • Written by Cormac McCarthy • Winner of the 2007 Pulitzer Prize • Inspiration was El Paso • Co-written by his son, John Francis, so the conversations are real between father and son

Cormac McCarthy • Charles McCarthy changed his name to Cormac, which is Gaelic for son of Charles • In order to write, McCarthy packed a high-wattage light bulb to use in his motel rooms • Also known for writing No Country for Old Men, All the Pretty Horses, Blood Meridian, and the screenplay The Counselor • Deeply private man who doesn’t vote • Lived in El Paso for years

  6. Rebecca • Published in 1938 • Written by Daphne du Maurier • Story weaves mystery, secrets and romance into an intricate plot • Dead wife and new wife and Mr. de Winter • Adapted by Alfred Hitchcock into a 1940 award-winning film

  7. Daphne du Maurier • Also known as Lady Browning • Husband sailed to find her after reading her first book – married for 33 years • Favorite of Alfred Hitchcock, as he also directed her story The Birds • Died in 1989 in England at the age of 81

Into the Wild • Published in 1996 • Made into a film in 1997 • Written by Jon Krakauer • Nonfiction story about Chris McCandless who graduates from college, says goodbye to his family, gives all his money to a nonprofit, and journeys to Alaska to live off the land • Four months later, his decomposed body was found

  9. Jon Krakauer • Born in 1954 • Spent three weeks living in Alaska in the wilderness • Climbed Mount Everest in 1996 in what became known as the Mount Everest disaster as 4 died • Also wrote Into Thin Air and Three Cups of Deceit
