  1. Understanding SCSI Device Lesson 6

  2. SCSI Host Adapter Board • You usually use a SCSI (Small Computer System Interface) host adapter card to implement SCSI on a desktop computer (Figure 6.1). Host adapter cards are installed just like sound cards, network cards, and other kinds of expansion cards. You may have purchased a computer with a host adapter already installed, or you may have installed the host adapter yourself. Most host adapters allow you to connect SCSI devices such as disk drives and CD-ROM drives inside the computer case, as well as scanners and other larger devices outside the computer case.

  3. Understanding your SCSI devices • When SCSI hardware and software are installed on your computer, you can easily connect a variety of devices to a single host adapter. These devices can communicate with each other and with the computer's microprocessor via the SCSI bus. This means that you do not need to install a separate host adapter for each new device you add to your computer and that different kinds of SCSI devices will be compatible with each other. • The following descriptions will help you to better understand the various types of SCSI devices you can connect to your host adapter.

  4. (1) Diskdrives • SCSI disk drives (Figure 6.2) store data on rigid platters that rotate rapidly inside a sealed case. In general, your computer can transfer data to and from SCSI drives faster than it can from non-SCSI drives. Many manufacturers sell SCSI disk drives in sizes ranging up to 8 GB or even larger. SCSI disk drives are usually mounted inside your computer case. You can also buy external SCSI drives and connect them to your host adapter with an external SCSI cable. An external and an internal SCSI drive are shown in Figure 6. 2. • Nearly all currently available SCSI drives conform to the SCSI-2 standard.

  5. (2) CD-ROM drives CD-ROM drives (Figure 6.3) are very useful for installing software, accessing very large files, and using multimedia programs on your computer. Adaptec EZ-SCSI software allows you to access data files and software on nearly any CD-ROM drive. It also supports the following: Audio CDs Video CD-ROM discs Recordable CD-ROM drives Photo-CD discs, including discs used in multisession CD-ROM drives "Juke box" CD-ROM drives that can access multiple discs The Adaptec EZ-SCSI software Readme file includes a list of specific CD-ROM drive models and the kinds of support provided for them.

  6. (3) Tape drives SCSI host adapters support many kinds of SCSI tape drives (Figure 6.4), using various tape formats. You can use these devices to back up files from your computer's hard disk drives and to restore files if your drives are damaged or accidentally erased. Adaptec EZ-SCSI software includes a Windows 95 tape backup application. The Adaptec EZ-SCSI software Readme file includes a list of specific SCSI tape drive models that are supported. 7. (4) Scanners Scanners (Figure 6.5) are useful for capturing black-and-white or color images in a graphics file and for creating text files from pages of printed text. Many models of SCSI scanners are available. You can use the scanner application included with Adaptec EZ-SCSI software to scan documents and graphics. The application allows you to print scanned images or to save them to a file. • (5) SCSI cables Several kinds of cables are used to connect SCSI devices to the host adapter and to each other. The two main types of SCSI cables are shown and identified above (Figure 6. 6). Click on the pictures to read more information about the cables.

  8. (6) SCSI connectors Various kinds of SCSI connectors (sometimes called headers) are used with different kinds of SCSI cables. These connectors are shown and identified below.(Figure 6.7 , 6.8 , 6.9) 50-pin internal connector 50-pin SCSI-2 external connector 68-pin .Wide SCSI internal connector Figure 6.7 Connector 1 68-pin Wide SCSI external connector Centroincs-style external connector
