  7. Here’s what our students tell us about Burger “ I HEART BURGER ”- Shealyn In our annual survey taken last month, 94% of our students told us they enjoy coming to school at Burger. They also told us some other things too. - 97% say they feel safe - 87% say they are recognized for their contributions - 97% say they are supported academically - 85% can work in their classroom without disruptions

  8. It takes a Team . . . Each Core Academic team consists of: • Approximately 80 students from Fyle and Sherman schools • Core teachers include: ELA, Science, Math, SS and counselor. • Team time: Allows the team the ability to collaborate as professionals on how to support our students.

  15. Common Core Learning Standards • 44 States including New York have begun to implement the CCLS in Math and ELA. • The new CCLS bring both challenge and opportunity for our students. • You can expect a cross curricular approach to CCLS. • www.Engageny.org

  17. Standards Based Grading • In RH, evaluation of learning is based on multiple measures that demonstrate student achievement toward meeting the academic standards. • We do so by focusing on 2 main components in our grading; Formative and Summative assessments.

  18. Summative Assessments • These assessments are aligned with the District curriculum maps and the Common Core Learning Standards. • Designed to provide students the opportunity to show what they know, understand, and are able to do. • Test/quizzes labs, essay, projects etc.

  19. Formative Assessments • Used to inform instructional decisions by individual teachers to guide students’ work towards standards • Examples may include homework, class work, and other smaller measures that naturally occur within the classroom setting.

  20. Student Report Cards • The purpose of a grade is to inform students, families and educators of a student’s academic progress toward a grade level standard • A grade should not necessarily reflect how hard a student works, but their ability to show they have learned the content. • Teachers will share their grading policies with you during Open House in the fall.

  21. Online Grading • “Parent Portal” • Each family will be provided with(Fall) a student specific passwordallowing you to see the teacher’sgrade book online. • A great opportunity for a partnership!

Communication • Report Cards are mailed home 4x a year. • Parent Portal: R-H’s online grade book • School Webpage -Daily Announcements posted • Classroom Webpage - All teachers have a page with a direct link to teacher email for follow up - Bookmark them all! • ‘E-News’ – Sign up now. • Monthly Newsletter – mostly electronic, paper available by request • PTO - Meetings/Canteens

  23. BMS Open House • Will occur on Monday, September15th. • At that time you will have an opportunity to meet the teachers, see our classrooms, learn about the course/expectations.

  24. Parent - Teacher Conferences • November 2014 (TBD) • Meet with core team teachers on conference days. • Forum designed to allow you to get information about your student’s progress. • All other staff can be scheduled individually or as needed throughout the year.

Clubs, Student Council Events and Intramurals • Clubs and Activities:We offer a ton of both co- and extra- curricular clubs. • Intramurals: Every T,W,TH morning from 7:45 - 8:15. • Sports:Not until next year for 6th graders ☹ • Special Events:Dances, Canteens, Musicals, Student Council Events and much more!

  26. 5th Graders Visit Burger! • May 29th- Sherman Burger Buddy Day! • May 30th - Sherman Burger Buddy Day! • June 5h:- Fyle Burger Buddy Day! • June 6th- Flye Burger Buddy Day! .

  27. Burger Visits the 5th Graders • May 13th - Fyle here we come! • June 9thSherman here we come! Mr. Lane, Mrs. Henderson, and Ms. Hawkes will visit incoming 6th graders . When we visit, we will show a short video on “Life in a Middle School.” This is a great opportunity for our new students to ask any questions.

Other “Important” Things to Know! • Event Parking and Drop Off Points • 7:45am early arrival time for students • Same lunch system used in our elementary schools! • All food allergies, ‘no snack’ info. carries over to the middle school! • Students will not need a meal card; they will use a pin number. • Wash. D.C. - begin fundraising in 6th grade.

  29. Time! Late August:Schedules will be mailed home. Included in the mailing will be information letting you know when 6th grade students canset up their lockers and get acclimated to their new school! There will be no formal orientationpresentationin the Summer!
