  2. Natural Factors • Tonga is an archipelago directly south of Western Samoa. Its 171 islands, 48 of them inhabited, are divided into three main groups--Vava'u, Ha'apai, and Tongatapu--and cover an 800-kilometer (500 mi.)-long north-south line. The largest island, Tongatapu, on which the capital city of Nuku'alofa is located, covers 257 square kilometers (99 sq. mi.). Geologically the Tongan islands are of two types: most have a limestone base formed from uplifted coral formations; others consist of limestone overlaying a volcanic base

  5. Exports • Exports: fish, squash, vanilla beans, coconut oil and other coconut products, watermelons, knitted clothes, cassava, yams, sweet potatoes, footwear.

Imports • Principal market: Japan 51.4% (2004) Imports food, beverages, tobacco, basic manufactures, machinery and transport equipment, mineral fuels. • Principal source: New Zealand 46.7% (2004) Arable land 20% (2006 est) Agricultural products coconuts, copra, cassava, vanilla, pumpkins, yams, taro, sweet potatoes, watermelons, tomatoes, lemons and limes, oranges, groundnuts, breadfruit; livestock rearing (pigs, goats, poultry, and cattle); fishing

  7. Formal Proposal • The project that will help my country get to the next stage of development is investing in tourism. Step 1 The government must take lead and provide incentives for foreign investors to Invest in the country. Paramount and a priority to these incentives are for the Government to provide cheap taxes, to allow investors to own land and not leasing, And to cut down on government red-tapes.

  8. Step 2 • Rebuild all the road with proper storm water drainage system, to build a second international airport for Vava’u, and to develop more international resorts and hotels throughout the kingdom.

  9. Proposal • In short, the government is to first legislate the laws and give incentives to foreign investors, and second, the investors will use their monies to rebuild the roads, airports, resorts and hotels, etc. The outcome is that local jobs will be created not only in the tourist industry, but in the building, transport, shops and supermarkets, cleaning, security, entertainment, handicrafts, farmers, fishing, and many others. Millions of tourists will bring with them million of dollars into the economy creating prosperity for the country and raising the standard of living for everyone.
