  8. The land that is now Quinta da Regaleira had many owners over the years. It belonged to the Viscountess of Regaleira, a family of wealthy merchants from Porto, when it was sold in 1892 to Carvalho Monteiro. Monteiro was eager to build a bewildering place where he could collect symbols that reflected his interests and ideologies. With the assistance of the Italian architect Luigi Manini, he recreated the 4-hectare estate

  11. Carvalho Monteiro, profoundly influenced by the 'revivalist' Neo-Manueline  architecture of the times, took inspiration for the construction of the palace and its chapel from the structural and decorative eclecticism of the Pena Palace and the Neo-Manueline style of the Palacio do Buçaco designed by the scenographer-architect Luigi Manini  (1848-1936)

  12. Monteiro hired Manini  to design and build Regaleira. The project was completed in 1911

  13. In addition to other new features, he added enigmatic buildings that allegedly held symbols related to alchemy, Masonry, the Knights Templar, and the Rosicrucians. The architecture Manini designed evoked Roman, Gothic, Renaissance, and Manueline styles. The construction of the current estate commenced in 1904 and much of it was completed by 1910

  14. The structure's façade is characterized by exuberantly Gothic pinnacles, gargoyles, capitals, and an impressive octagonal tower

  15. The celebrated capitalist Carvalho Monteiro was of Portuguese descent but was born in Rio de Janeiro, at a time when Brazil was governed by an Emperor. He graduated in law from the University of Coimbra, was a distinguished bibliophile, collector and philanthropist.  With his scientific and cultured mind, he determined the mysterious iconographical program for Regaleira, his residence in Sintra.

  16. Acquired by the Sintra Town Council in 1997, it finally opened to the public in June 1998
