  2. Sintra, a picturesque Portuguese town set amidst the pine-covered hills of the Serra de Sintra is known for its many 19th-century Romantic architectural monuments. Quinta da Regaleira, an estate located near Sintra-Vila is classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO within the “Cultural Landscape of Sintra”. Much of the four hectares of land in the surrounding estate consists of a densely treed park lined with myriad roads and footpaths. The woods are neatly arranged in the lower parts of the estate, but are left wild and disorganized in the upper parts, reflecting Carvalho Monteiro's belief in primitivism. Decorative, symbolic, and lively structures can be found throughout the park

The "Initiation Well" connects to other tunnels via a series of underground walkways. At the bottom of the hill, the “Promenade of the Gods” (Patamar dos Deuses) is an alley that links the Pisoes Loggia to the Main House, with statues of classical gods: Venus, Flora, Ceres, Fortune, Hermes, Dionysus, Orpheus, Pan and Vulcan
