  2. Sintra, a picturesque Portuguese town set amidst the pine-covered hills of the Serra de Sintra is known for its many 19th-century Romantic architectural monuments. Quinta da Regaleira, an estate located near Sintra-Vila is classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO within the “Cultural Landscape of Sintra”. Much of the four hectares of land in the surrounding estate consists of a densely treed park lined with myriad roads and footpaths. The park also contains an extensive and enigmatic system of tunnels, which have multiple entry points that include: grottoes, the chapel, Waterfall Lake, and "Leda's Cave," which lies beneath the Regaleira Tower. The "Initiation Well" connects to other tunnels via a series of underground walkways

  13. ‘Regaleira’ built by (the owner) Antonio Augusto Carvalho Monteiro in conjunction with the renowned Italian opera set designer and architect Luigi Manini.   17. Several of the tunnels and caves are covered with rocks brought in from the coast in the Peniche region, chosen in order to give a sense of being in a submerged world

  21. The Quinta da Regaleira is like stepping right into a fairytale. The gardens of the Quinta da Regaleira were styled to represent ancient secret orders, with hidden tunnels and concealed symbolism referencing alchemy, Masonry, the Knights Templar and the Rosicrucians

  23. the Portal of the Guardians, a dramatic structure with twin towers flanking a central pavilion.  Under the central pavilion is one of the entrance ways to the Initiation Well, a “subterranean tower” that sinks some 27 meters into the earth, made accessible by a monumental spiral stairway.   It is symbolic of the connection between Heaven and Earth

  26. The “Well of Initiation” – burrows 27 meters (almost 100 feet) into the earth. It’s believed these “initiation wells” were used to perform Mason initiation rites and rituals, although nothing is known for sure about their purpose

Accessible via a winding staircase with nine levels referencing the nine circles of hell and paradise, this well was never intended to serve as a source of water; instead, it was used for ceremonial and symbolic rites, including those of the Tarot, which were intended to intensify the relationship between heaven and earth

  28. At the bottom of the well there is a compass over a Knights Templar cross, which is said to have been  Monteiro’s herald and a sign of his Rosicrucianism. Very little is known about how the wells were used and what exactly went on there, though it is clear to see that great effort went into their planning and construction
